Every dark cloud has a silver lining, or so they say. It means that even the worst circumstances or events can have good that can be harvested from them. While no one is saying that the events themselves are good, the impact that they have can bear some sweet fruit from the bitter roots that it spawned from.

If it weren't for a blackout, hip-hop might never exist. A BP oil spill lead to several discoveries in the ocean. And, while it shouldn't have taken a worldwide conflict, a woman's right to vote may still have been a fight to earn if it weren't for World War I. Several awful events that hurt the Earth and/or cost lives really sucked and shouldn't have had to happen, but at least they weren't done totally in vain.
