30 TV and Movie Characters That Changed Dramatically Over the Course of a Franchise

The biggest glow-ups and glow-downs in TV history
30 TV and Movie Characters That Changed Dramatically Over the Course of a Franchise

On a solid binge, you might notice that pilot episodes always seem to look out of place. Thats because they are. They were this one-off pipe dream of an episode (usually shot way before the rest of the first season) that lets the audience, the creators and the network all dip their toes into the warm bath of what the show could be.

Sometimes a show needs a lot more than one episode to find its stride, though. The first and last seasons of Parks and Recreation look drastically different (for all the right reasons).

Their glow-up was pretty spot-on, but some of these other shows and characters… Oof. Seems like finding a stride and keeping that stride are two totally different things.

True Blood

CRACKED.COM Worst TV Finales True Blood Bill coerces Sookie into killing him, so she can live a normal life - negating the show's themes of questioning such imposed notions of normality. True Blood began all edgy, and concluded like the happy ending to a Lifetime drama.

Game of Thrones

Worst TV Finales Game of Thrones The show's ending capped off an already disappointing season with rushed storylines and nonsensical character turns. It was like the showrunners got tired of making up for the non- existing novels and went, let's get this over with already and move on to something else. CRACKED.COM

Flanders from The Simpsons

Oh, that's where the term Flanderization comes from. THE SIMPSONS HOLY BIBLE CRACKED.COM Not overly religious, and even a bit spicy in The Simpsons pilot, Flanders quickly became religion-obsessed. Writers said that he was deliberately changed to satirize the growing influence of Christianity in politics at the time.

Andy from The Office

Andy can stay... If he changes! THE OFFICE CRACKED.COM Andy Bernard was only supposed to be Jim's antagonist for a few episodes, but cast and crew wanted him to stay. Originally a total prick, the character lands in anger management after punching a wall, and returns as a nice nerd (with bleeding nipples.)

Alexis Rose from Schitt’s Creek

Alexis Rose First line: Last line: Love you. They're taking our stuff. Schitt's Creek Alexis Rose's first and last lines reflect her and her families' transformation, from people who care all about stuff and appearances - her first line spoken into a phone - into a family who loves each other. Two and a Half Men

Worst TV Finales Two and a Half Men Charlie Sheen was absent for the last seasons after a public meltdown. Then, in the last episode, a Sheen stand-in returns home and is crushed by a piano, only for the real Chuck Lorre to say Sheen's Winning! catchphrase (and be crushed by a piano as well). Chuck Lorre CRACKED.COM

Shirley Feeney from Laverne & Shirley

CRACKED LAVERNE E & SHIRLEY SHIRLEY FEENEY In the first 2 episodes, Shirley has a thick Brooklyn accent (and sassy attitude). Wanting to appeal to the midwest, the show had her drop the accent and act more proper.

Dexter

CRACKED.COM Worst TV Finales Dexter Not only were fans supposed to deal with creepy incest storylines and Dexter getting away with (serial) murder, but the show ended in 2013 on a weird note, with him surviving a storm and rebuilding his life as a lumberjack. Nobody was satisfied with this ending, and it's not like the 2021 revival redeemed it either.

Friends

We were on a break... From the old Ross! Mor FRIENDS CRACKED.COM With a Ph.D in paleontology, Ross began as a soft spoken straight man. After the We were on a break episode in Season 3, writers thought his loud neuroticism was funny, and began putting him in infuriating situations.

Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation

Season 1 Leslie is unrecognizable. PARKS & REC S WOMEN la the Lanny 3 CRACKED.COM Originally incompetent and in over her head, the show felt it didn't suit Amy's natural charisma and optimism, and luckily course-corrected. Her new persona was a great politician whose comedy came from her bubbly optimism.

Joey from Friends

Joey: from struggling actor to struggling mentally. FRIENDS CRACKED.COM Joey was never the smartest, but early in Season 1, he has street smarts, and even gave sound life advice. Не suddenly gets incredibly dumb, failing to realize Phoebe and Ursula (her twin) have the same birthday, and his IQ is all downhill from there.

Creed from The Office

We wanted more Creed and we got it. THE OFFICE CRACKED.COM Not the band. Originally a hardworking background character on The Office, Creed Bratton began having this dark, secretive other life. His mystique got more intriguing as they kept hinting that he might be a murderer.

Boy Meets World

Eric Matthews got dumb overnight. BOY MEETS WORLD CRACKED.COM Early in Boy Meets World, Eric is the cool, charming older brother with average intelligence, but he becomes a wacky, cartoonish moron after a concussion in Season 4's Easy Street.

Ralph Malph from Happy Days

Ralph Malph WEST HAPPY DAYS HIGH SCHOOL TRESPASS to as on CRACKED.COM In the 4th episode of Season 1, Ralph Malph lost his hip, more Fonzie-like traits and became the dork he'd be for the next 250 episodes.

Kelly Bundy from Married... With Children

Kelly Bundy, now dumber with less clothes. MARRIED... WITH CHILDREN CRACKED.COM In what some call one of the most demeaning personality changes in TV history, Kelly Bundy began as a rebellious, witty teen, her IQ and wardrobe took a hit in Season 2, and she became a hyper-sexualized dumb blonde stereotype.

The Office

Jan went from uptight to unhinged. THE OFFICE CRACKED.COM Initially, Jan was no-nonsense and represented corporate values. Не character soon begins to unravel into a boob job, scented candles, releasing Michael's diary, and clearly taking her assistant, Hunter's virginity.

Red

Red Forman 2.0... Dumbass! THAT 70'S SHOW CRACKED.COM In early episodes of That '70s Show, Red was firm, but he had more heart-to-heart real moments. Fan reactions to him calling everyone a dumbass, or threatening to put his foot in everyone's ass had the character mold into a one-note hardass.

Full House

Full House JOHN POSEY Вов SACET CRACKED.COM THE PILOT THE SHOW Before Bob Saget smirked his way into our hearts, Danny Tanner was played by comedian John Posey. Producers decided Posey didn't have the right vibe, so they reshot just the Tanner scenes with Saget.

Frasier

Frasier one = I ff. CRACKED.COM THE PILOT THE SHOW Lisa Kudrow played Roz in the pilot, but was given the boot because her vibe wasn't quite right. Absolutely devastating - until she booked Friends a year later.

Seinfeld

Seinfeld IEI И Г CRACKED.COM THE PILOT THE SHOW The pilot famously aired as The Seinfeld Chronicles. Beyond that, Kramer (whose name was Kessler) owned a dog, Elaine didn't exist in any capacity, and the female lead was instead a waitress at the diner.

Star Trek

Star Trek: The Original Series CRACKED COM THE PILOT THE SHOW In the first of two pilots, we see a very alien scene: Spock smiling alongside Captain Christopher Pike. Pike would obviously be replaced by Captain Kirk; in fact, Spock was the only major character to survive the first pilot.
