People were convinced that daytime talk shows, tawdry primetime soaps and cartoons that were simplistic to the point of insulting babies were going to turn us into drooling zombies. Even the supposedly worthless sitcoms that we now recognize as some of comedy’s finest products were said to fry your brains.

Between writers’ strikes, pandemics and plain old pandering to the lowest common denominator, small-screen entertainment has never been more brainless.
