21 Problems That Will Become Huge Real Soon

Have you ever lived in an old house with janky floorboards and indifferent landlords? Maybe, one day, you come across a loose stair, and you really can’t deal with that right now. You duct tape it, try to clamp it down with clothespins, learn where the safest place to step on it is and basically ignore it as best you can. Sure, it’ll eventually fall apart completely, but that’s future you’s problem.

Well, we’re all that impendingly hobbled tenant, in a variety of ways. There’s just a ton of loose stairs that we as a society are ignoring or, at best, duct taping that are going to catch up with us — and soon. They were revealed after user GaddockTeegFunPolice asked r/AskReddit, “What is a ticking time bomb that people should be worried about but aren’t aware of?”

imthescubakid 1y ago The massive die off of bugs
Cissyhayes 1y ago We are running out of sand that you can build with
TastesLikeAsbestos- 1y ago Candida auris - the unkillable, infectious yeast.
JasperDyne 1y ago The dangers of microplastics from plastic containers, food wrappers, bottles, etc.
Drink_Duff_ 1y ago The Super Volcano under Yellowstone National Park. When that puppy blows, it's game over for all of us.
Narf234 1y ago Permafrost melting. Good luck trying to green wash our way out of that.
MacheteTigre 1y ago You should take a look at safety inspection ratings for dams and bridges, especially around the east coast. Shouldn't take you too long to get worried
Both_Hunter1343 1y ago EMP due to solar flares. We are overdue for a large eruption and totally unprepared. Would send us back to 1840's technology levels.
kbcr924 1y ago Antibiotic resistance. People are already dying of previously treatable infections. It's only going to get worse
NativeMasshole 1y ago How climate change is going to impact food security in the coming years. Increased precipitation and heat are already doing a ton of damage to crops. I fully believe we'll see widespread famine within my lifetime.
Timely_Egg_6827 1y ago Erosion of best arable land due to overuse of fertilisers and deep ploughing. Dust bowls in China, Ukraine and Russia. Grain prices going to rise and grain in most food supplies.
Dark_Lord_Mark 1y ago The increasing acidification of the ocean due to increased carbon in the atmosphere. When the blue green algae starts dying off oxygen levels will be reduced and see if you can guess what happens then
elchinguito 1y ago The collapse of the the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation aka the ocean conveyor belt that moves heat predictably around the Atlantic basin. If this collapses...chaos. Extreme cooling and warming in different parts of the world. It may be starting to happen right now.
GravityPools 1y ago The rising sea levels mean that within a couple decades most of the county of Bangladesh will be under water, and nearly 144 Million people will be displaced. The neighboring countries will also lose area to the advancing sea, or they're already very densely populated. The climate crisis is about to cause an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
VoluptuousSloth e 1y ago The Cascadia subduction zone. Historically there been regular strong earthquakes every few hundred years. The Pacific Northwest is not built for earthquakes and even a 7 would be a disaster, nevermind an 8 or even 9. One of these could wipe out large sections of the Pacific Northwest and cause massive casualties
dntdrmit 1y ago WW2 ships. Not a joke. All the ships from WW2 that were sunk are still there. All with 1000's of liters of oil, fuel, chemicals, explosives...just sitting there. Rotting away. Starting to leak. Google it. It's terrifyingly that no-one is doing a thing about them.
xaviira 1y ago The Kessler effect. We have been putting all sorts of satellites and other space junk into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for decades without much of a coherent plan for how we were going to get that stuff down or generally manage how much stuff was up there. At some point, scientists believe the density of space junk in the LEO will reach a critical mass, and start a cascading chain reaction known as Kessler syndrome or the Kessler effect. Under the right circumstances, two pieces of space debris - like old satellites - could crash into each other and explode into
FreshwaterViking 1y ago Aquifers are being drained at completely unsustainable levels. The ones under Kansas and Atlanta are in dire straits. Many others are being contaminated by agricultural chemicals. It's going to be very bad by 2050. If you buy real estate, GET MINERAL AND WATER RIGHTS TO IT.
roundntalented 1y ago Overfishing and bycatch has caused a huge loss of species and populations of fish. There are species that have been so over fished that there are not enough reproducing adults left- young fish not at reproductive age are whats being caught and in the next few years we will see well known fish species go extinct. Thousands of sharks are killed as bycatch daily, and larger species take so long to reproduce, they can't keep up either. Our oceans are about to look very different.
