20 Telltale Signs That a Man Was Written By a Woman

For a long time, including approximately now, the most popular fiction was written by men. Unfortunately, not everything was Band of Brothers, so that meant men were writing most fictional women — and failing at it. There are almost always signs. She thinks a lot about her own sexiness. She doesn’t have any thoughts or feelings unrelated to the male protagonist. She boobs boobily.

Redditor daddydonetomuch is well aware of this fact. “We all know examples of tropes that (make) it clear that a male author is writing a female character,” they told r/AskReddit. What they wanted to know, however, was “what are some that make it obvious that a female author (is) writing a male character?”

This is what their fellow Redditors came up with…

angrylesbian66 5mo ago Не towered over her
Fleetwood889 5mo ago Referring to the man's shirt as his top.
Famous-Ad-9467 5mo ago The male lead being able to anticipate the emotions and feelings if the female lead.
BigNorseWolf 5mo ago You see into the male characters head and there's more than one thing happening up there at a time.
Fully_Edged_Ken_3685 5mo ago Red, White, and Royal Blue has multiple instances of unreciprocated oral between gay male characters. Only a straight woman could come up with that
lurgi 5mo ago Edited 5mo ago Female authors seem to describe the color of a man's hair much more than male authors. Particularly if it is graying.
wordboydave 5mo ago Shoulders and eye color. That's how I figured out S.E. Hinton.
dekunut1023 5mo ago We read The Outsiders in 7th grade, and my male teacher said you could tell the author was a woman because the boys were always hugging, crying, and being generally emotionally vulnerable.
Snoo-35252 5mo ago Just tell her how you feel. Men don't talk like that to other men. But I hear that in Hallmark movies (which I watch with my wonderful wife) all the time.
See_Bee10 5mo ago Male protagonist written by women are often far less decisive, more introspective, and generally more feelings oriented than those written by men. I think men irl tend to be more problem/action oriented than women author's tend to write them.
thiscouldbemassive 5mo ago Не is utterly fascinated by a single woman and finds her irresistibly interesting even when she's not really doing much other than breathing, or even being actively obnoxious, and he's cued into her every emotion and desire.
willowoftheriver 5mo ago I nearly fucked up this way when I originally had a (straight) male character mentally describing another male character he doesn't even like as objectively handsome. Eventually, I thought about that and realized that's so not the terminology he'd be using.
AriasK 5mo ago He's brooding and kind of an asshole but he notices the protagonist because she's not like other girls. She doesn't wear makeup and she reads books. Everyone else thinks she's plain but they can't see what he can see. He's is rude and aggressive towards her to start off with. Always being frustrated by her clumsiness. But he can't stay away from her.
5mo ago The men are generally there in service of the female characters, and as such, there is a severe lack of brotherhood. Men are openly antagonistic to each other if a woman's affection is on the line. Harsh words, threatening gestures and actual fist fights are all par between these characters. They don't need anything from each other as much as they need this or that female character's attention. Men, for both better and for much worse, are not like this. They absolutely compete for womens' affection and they don't do it anything like that.
pedestrianstripes 5mo ago I thought I was reading a novel from a male author until the novel got to a scene with two adult brothers play fighting. The scene was really descriptive and unusually long. I thought if a man wrote this, one brother would have punched the other brother in the arm and that's it. Instead the brothers were wrestling and laughing. I think one brother might have mussed the other brother's hair for no reason.
Zladedragon 5mo ago Certain topics make it way more obvious than others. However I think when men apologize in books it becomes very obvious which sex is writing it. Even worse when you get to hear the dudes thinking while it's happening.
5mo ago If a male character has a stallion or a python in his pants, odds are the book was written by a woman or the character is a rare animal smuggler.
dmdewd 5mo ago If his forearms are being described in any way and it's not a book about Popeye, that's a lady writing the book.
omguserius 5mo ago Incredibly rich men who somehow never do their jobs are a dead giveaway. He's a billionaire who... occasionally takes a call in the car?
Atmosck 5mo ago Finance. Trust fund. 6'5. Blue eyes.
