27 of the Worst Scenes Witnessed by Emergency Responders

Despite the prevalence of true-crime series and podcasts, there’s nothing like hearing a harrowing tale from someone who’s actually witnessed such a gruesome scene. At family dinner, one Redditor’s uncle, who was an EMT in the ‘80s, told a story about the worst thing he’d seen on the job. A guy had gotten hit by a train near an old bridge. When the two EMTs arrived on the scene, they found the top half of the man 15 feet from the train, but couldn’t find his bottom half. As it turns out, the guy crawled for a bit before dying, and his lower half was discovered in a nearby body of water a few hours later.

Understandably, that uncle is no longer allowed to speak at family dinners.

Other Redditors who work as emergency responders have described the horrifying things they’ve seen at work, including a lot of stories that will encourage you to wear your seatbelt.

8y ago o Car exploded. Looking for pieces of the body around the vehicle after we put the fire out (ex fire fighter), moving rocks around to see what we could find. Picked up a rock. It had fingers. 119 ...
IrrelevantPuppy 6mo ago Transport truck tire came off at highway speeds. It jumped the median and landed through the windshield into a woman's chest cavity. She did nothing wrong, not a single thing. For all I know even the transport driver all did the appropriate checks. She probably didn't even see it coming. Just one moment she was driving on the highway, and the next she had a 60lb tire lodged into her spine from the front and her life was over. + 3.6K Reply Share ...
TheRightStuff088 6mo ago Former cop. Had a guy die alone in a hoarder house. This was during the summer and he wasn't found for weeks. Rolled into that job as a foul odor. Не was completely intact besides his face which had completely melted and decomposed. It was down to raw skull. Henceforth he was know as Scorpion. I'll never forget that smell. + Reply Share 1.8K ...
AppendixF 6mo ago State trooper here. An old guy crosses into the oncoming lane and hits head-on with a lifted Suburban. Lifted Suburban drives up and over the windshield on the driver's side. The tire ends up making contact with the old guy's head and pops it like a zit, brain matter came out the side of his head. His face was mostly intact, but you could look into his empty skull cavity where his brain used to be. Share 214 Reply ...
6mo ago Toast-Master-General Motorcyclist clipped a car, came off their bike at insane speed and hit a lamppost. Part of their body stopped at the post and the other part went 20 yards down the road. Mummy wet balloons! exclaimed a child in the impacted car, pointing at the guts of the man linking the two halves. 481 Reply Share ...
Grumpygumz 6mo ago Responded to a call at an industrial laundry facility. Lady got her arm stuck in the machinery and was bleeding out. Long story short, we had to cut her arm off to get her out. No fun. 323 Reply Share ...
nathanwl2004 8y ago In addition to alot of the usual combat injuries, I once witnessed an old man get run over by a speeding car in baghdad. You could hear the bones crunch when he got hit. We were on a foot patrol when it happened. We ran over and he was a mess. We didn't have a medical with us on this patrol but most of us had decent first responder training and a few had EMT training. we worked on him for a while and medevaced him but I'm not sure if he made it. 488 ...
coombuyah26 6mo ago Edited 6mo ago Charter plane crash into the side of a mountain in Alaska. 1 dead on impact, 4 in critical condition. The second guy we hoisted into the helicopter was so covered in blood I assumed he was dead. One of the survivors of the crash was elderly and had a heart attack as soon as he was pulled from the wreckage and died. It took 3 hours to hoist the 3 survivors. A brown bear was watching from a few hundred feet off the whole time. I assume he smelled the blood. + 1.2K Reply
b-cola 6y ago My neighbour is a paramedic (I've also had to tell him to stop sharing stories) : Не told me once that he arrived on scene where a girl jumped in front of a subway train and the girl was mangled on the tracks/under the train. Apparently she was in a few pieces. One of the medics said something like, she's definitely gone, and right after that they heard her say, no I'm not. I believe she was dead seconds later. + Share 319 ...
GPM7 6y ago A 911 call was sent to us as ambulance level overdose, and the dispatch said that he took four tabs of acid (instead of the prescribed one). We arrive on scene, and the dude was so out of it that he pulled his left eye out with a fork. My driver vomited upon sight. The worst part, he stepped on it because he thought it was a cockroach. + 449 Share ...
billbapapa 6y ago e Brother is/was a first responder (сор not paramedic). Sad they arrived to find a guy who jumped off a bridge, and somehow landed on one of those fence posts with a spike on the top, and was literally empaled on it. + 714 Share ...
this_is_your_dad 6y ago My neighbor is a firefighter/EMT. I had to tell him to stop sharing stories. But here's one anyway: Girl ran over her boyfriend with a car, he got stuck underneath, and was scraped down to nearly nothing on the pavement for about two miles. Like a bloody piece of chalk my neighbor told me. + 5.1K Share ...
Robiow 6y ago . Guy fell onto a toilet roll holder, pierced his eye, straight into the back of his skull, even carefully moving him, you could hear it scraping the inside of his skull.
fireinvestigator113 6y ago - Edited 6y ago Volunteer firefighter/EMT for awhile. A guy fell off his roof and landed on both feet. It broke both his legs and both bones broke the skin. Не was home alone without his cell phone so he dragged himself from where he fell ~30 feet to the closest phone in the garage to call 911. Also went on a run where a girl wanted to prove she was an adult to her dad. So she repeatedly ran her head into a telephone pole. Eventually she aimed wrong and stabbed herself in the head with
anail1994 6y ago Not me but my dad. Не was a wreck recovery wrecker operator for a long time. It was new year's eve 1992. Не got a call for a convertible wrapped around a tree. Не got on scene and this is what he pulled up on, a 1991 Chrysler tc convertible with the top down, wrapped around a telephone pole. Two people still in it, one, apparently a female, with no head. The people where drunk, speeding, with the top down, and lost control. It spun and hit the pole. As it hit the pole the female passenger's
Dane_Gleessak 6y ago I'm a cop and I've been on plenty of calls with EMS. 2 that l'll never forget are the guy that tried to commit suicide with a crossbow to the neck. Didn't succeed and was talking with us when we arrived. Second was the lady that had been dead a few days, usually no big deal. But she was laying with her face in front of a space heater. Yeah her face melted. 771 Share ...
Rulerofbaconville 6y ago . Edited 6y ago e There was a guy doing laundry or cleaning his apartment when he dropped a bottle of bleach. The gallon container landed perfectly square and shot the bleach straight up into his eyes. I've seen more gore and things of that nature, but I think of that guy every time I see a gallon of bleach.
HBry1004 6y ago Not paramedic but used to volunteer as an EMT Aide during high school. We had a call where a guy got kicked in the face by a horse once. Half of his face structure basically collapsed. It was hella scary since I just started maybe a few weeks earlier. The patient was really nice and tried to joke around though. I would have passed out if I were him. + 7.1K Share ...
UsernamesR4squares 6y ago I'm a cop. Responded to a wreck where a guy was doing donuts in a gravel parking lot. Не was showing his son around in his Jeep. Не hit a bump and rolled the Jeep onto the roof. Neither were wearing their seat belts. Kid had to sit there with his leg pinned under the в post next to his dad whose head was crushed under the dash. Не was there at least 20 minutes. Still remember that kid asking me in the back of the ambulance if his dad was dead. + 6.2K Share ...
6y ago Not me, but an instructor when I was taking EMT training.... A convertible had flipped (Ya, I'll never get a convertible because of this fear) and skidded down the road a ways. Both the woman who was driving and the child in the car seat had half their heads ground away by the sliding car. There were two very clear and distinct streaks of blood and brain down the road. That was the day she said she decided to be an instructor instead of on-call paramedic. + 7.4K Share ...
Fan_of_trypto 6y ago EMT here, not a medic. This one fucked me up for a bit and makes me a much more cautious driver. Some teenagers with mustangs decided to race each other down the highway at 1am. End up losing control at insane speeds and initially bumping each other, sending the car in the right lane off into the trees, driver somehow survived and was MedEvac'd out in critical condition. Car in the left lane went over the guardrail median and head first into a Jeep, then caught on fire. We got on scene and found the now- extinguished,
NerdDepot . 6y ago A Volunteer fire in the 90s. SUV flipped over guardrail in the mountians, and we were tasked with weeding through the river 60 ft below to try and locate the body parts of an 8yo girl. Still have nightmares. + 6K Share ...
6y ago My mother (ER doctor) once told me about this woman, hit by a bus. She was literally squashed under the wheels, and when her son tried to save her, grabbing her by the only leg that was still visible, he pulled and pulled till he detached it from her body. I was like ten when she told me, and it fucked up with me for a while. + Share 5.3K ...
Demented471 6y ago Probably the time I was talking to a patient who we had been called to take into a 5150 hold for a 24 hr. Psych evaluation by the local PD. Не was a big guy, and was holding a small Hello Kitty flip phone and crying about his daughter. When I got to explaining what we would be doing, he pulled out a pistol and shot himself. I, got a mouthful of brain and skull richochet from the cargo container he was leaning agaisnt. Yeah local PD, he's very clear of weapons, good job. + Share 15K
OurLordAndSaviourCam 6y ago Uncle was a Paramedic is the 80s and after a few drinks at a family party he told us his worst story. Got a call that a guy got hit by a train near an old bridge in my town. When him and his partner arrived they found the top half of him at about 15 feet away from the tracks and his lower half nowhere in sight. Turns out the guy crawled a few feet before dying at the scene. They found his legs in the water a few hours later My uncle doesn't tell stories
b0radb0rad 6y ago Obligatory not a Paramedic, but law enforcement. Anyways, I hear a panicky call over the radio for a supervisor to attend a unit. This was around 1am, well into nightshift. I was covering the unit next door so I popped over and see the officer, she is white as a ghost and sitting at a table. I ask her what's up, and she just points to a cell. I look and the window is covered in blood. So I look in....and it's like a в movie horror scene. The guy had cut a major vein on the
