20 Bizarre Experiences With ‘Sovereign Citizens’

There’s always going to be some weirdo who thinks the rules shouldn’t apply to them. Sure, as teenagers we think about what a grave injustice it is that none of us asked to be born, but sometime during adulthood we get over it, find a job and move forward.

Well, not all of us. Sovereign citizens, who refuse to be sheeple like the rest of us, truly believe they’ve cracked the code — until they’re forced to rejoin society for one reason or another. These encounters make for bizarre experiences, like seeing a sovereign citizen defend their license plate, which consisted of crayon drawings on construction paper, during a court hearing.

Other Redditors have recalled the times they had a brush with a sovereign citizen, and you have to admit, these people definitely have vivid imaginations.

Haunting_Lime308 2mo ago Had a coworker who was a cop, previously in Florida. Decided to do air traffic control literally because of sovereign citizens. Не said when you were approaching a known drug dealer, robber, even murderer you had a plan of action to how this may go down. Most situations turned out fine, and even the accused criminals knew their rights. But sovereign citizens were mostly at traffic stops, and once they started spouting that shit he knew they were in for a long couple hours. They'd argue every random bullshit thing that popped into their head, after they
ucbiker . 5mo ago RVA I was in a courtroom once when one showed up and everyone except the judge, including the bailiffs, other uninvolved attorneys, etc. audibly groaned. 2 Reply ...
randomwords83 5mo ago I worked in banking for more than 20 years and I came across multiple. They always tried to explain that the rules didn't apply to them and our policies/federal regulations were against their beliefs or whatever. One of them had a car loan they paid off and several years later tried to sue us for the amount of the vehicle plus interest and legal fees. I absolutely hated dealing with them, they were so delusional. 2 Reply ...
sto_brohammed 5mo ago Michigander e Breizh I've known one sovcit. Dude was always a conspiracy theorist sort of guy, was in the Michigan Militia in the 90s and pretty much ate up every single anti-government and anti-minority conspiracy theory he ever heard. I couldn't tell you exactly why he was like that, I haven't talked to him in about 10 years. The last I heard he'd bought land in the Upper Peninsula and fell deep down the prepper rabbithole. + 12 Reply ...
nuwaanda 5mo ago Chicago, IL My dad tried to be a SovCit. It was (and still is) embarrassing. Dude worked for the state government.... Gets real mad when I, who am CPA eligible, remind him that all the Income tax was not properly ratified and we don't have to pay it!1!! citations he uses are from a dude in jail for tax evasion. BunnyHugger99 5mo ago I have a federal job so I've come across them and auditors before, they typically are just a headache and have incorrect citations to justify thier actions. End of the day they simply want a reaction and if you don't give them one they will move on to someone who will. I had a guy come in and I basically kept my answers to his questions brief and ignored him, he then moved on to the fire station where they gave him the reaction he wanted, he filmed it and then posted it on YouTube for a
IGotFancyPants 5mo ago I work in a sleepy county tax office. The sovereign citizens tend not to come to the office in person, but we occasionally get a long, rambling letter from one guy, filled with nonsensical legal citations that he thinks support his tax-exempt claims (they don't). We read it, get a good laugh, shake our heads, and file it under WTF. 8 Reply ...
twillardswillard 5mo ago I worked at a pawn shop several years ago, and there was a guy wanting to sell us a laptop. When I asked for his ID, he refused and handed me a card about Islam. Не then went on to tell me how state and federal IDs were a form of slavery. It was an odd interaction. + 13 Reply ...
kitjen 7y ago Not a police officer myself but my mate is and he was doing the speed gun thing one shift. And this might be boring but I liked it. Не caught a guy speeding and stopped him. The driver starts playing the whole is that gun a calibrated device, was anyone harmed, is there a victim shite. My mate simply told him that they would not be changing the laws by discussing it at the roadside but he was free to contest it through the appropriate legal channels. But right now Sir, you were doing 44mph on a
Yorushicookie 7y ago One of my friends considers himself a sovereign citizen. I usually zone out when he's explaining some old maritime law or whatever that makes him exempt from everything he doesn't like. Honestly, nothing's really different between him and my other friends except for the fact that he's got a rap sheet like three pages long full of simple trespassing and stuff because you can't own land, man or whatever the hell. + 736 ...

steaksahoy 7y ago Never encountered one as a cop, but in my previous life as a court based prison officer I had one who declared to the court the usual I am X of the family Y and my friend says this is illegal. Long story short he got remanded, attacked me and another officer in the dock with his crutches. Не got put to the ground, put in a lock, then cuffs, then C&R'd down to the cell to calm. Не didn't. Proceeded to smear himself and his cell in his own faeces and attempted to hang himself with
InternMan 7y ago Not a cop but I work for a local government entity. We may or may not be dealing with one right now. The story so far is that she was trying to(did?) gain access to our office area which due to stored materials/data is locked by kind of hotel door lock. She had tried to(succeeded?) obtain a key to these locks from a totally unrelated department that is actually classified as external. We though this was weird, notified security, and put up some signs saying that this was not a public office. We thought that was the
The_lady_is_trouble 7y ago Edited 7y ago ADA here. Had one try to explain to me that we couldn't charge him with a suspended license because reasons and boats and whatnot. Не went on for a good 20 minutes about how the government didn't have the right to license him as a free human being and his right to interstate travel. There was also something about his right to wear a hat in court because he was a free man and I have no idea, I stopped listening because I was laughing too loudly. I told him I'd drop the license
asoiahats 7y ago Lawyer here. I once faced off against one in Court. Не asked the Master of the Courts to override the Supreme Court of Canada. When the Master wouldn't do that our freeman tried to convince him to disbar me, saying that I'm not really an attorney. This was quite funny because in Canada we don't call lawyers attorneys. Не later filed an affidavit claiming that he was a former client of mine and thus I was acting in conflict of interest. Crazy. + 1.3K ...
ghost_finger 7y ago I'm not police but I work in local government and we have a few of these people. One in particular routinely sends certified letters stating that the US constitution does not require her to be a part of the US and that local government can therefore not require her to pay taxes or anything. She routinely sends subpoenas for people to appear in her court to answer for violations of things. The really creepy part is she also puts a thumbprint in blood as her signature. + 672 ...

biggins9227 7y ago I had to deal with a few of these as a correctional officer. They'd tell me that it was illegal to hold them in prison, that our write ups didn't matter, ect. They were generally harmless inside. However we did have to watch a dashcam video of two cops pulling one over. While the cops were arresting the driver (outstanding warrent) his 12 year old kids gets out with an ak and kills both cops. + 500 ...
