21 Groups We Pretend Are Normal That Are Actually Cults

We in the Western world like to act like we’re all about the rugged individual, but deep down inside, we just want to belong. It turns out it’s pretty hard to fulfill all of your emotional, spiritual, social and even some physical needs all on your own (that guy knows what we’re talking about), so we form groups, and sometimes, we get a little too into them.

As a result, a lot of modern life is pretty hard to distinguish from a cult. There are political factions and actual religions, yes, but also a bunch of shit you’d never think people could become zealots about, but here we are. Absent a deeper purpose in life, people will devote themselves to whatever messiah they find.

So when user suckontitties (a worthy cause on its own) asked r/AskReddit, “What is a cult that pretends it’s not cult?” pretty much every facet of modern life was in the hot seat.

Terp_Villain 2y ago Fans of Joe rogan
NotYourSnowBunny 2y ago The Grateful Dead Family. What a wonderful mixed bag of both amazing people and assholes.
RunawaYEM 2y ago Crossfitter here. We are absolutely a cult. Phish fan also. HUGE cult.
Your-Yoga-Mermaid 2y ago FFA. Future Farmers of America. Have you seen their conventions?
cncamusic 2y ago I swear this question is asked like once a week. My answer remains r/rollerblading
DDoggDizzle 2y ago A lot of my friends and family tell me I'm unknowingly in the cult of jeep owners... I mean it's a jeep thing they wouldn't understand.
oculasti95 2y ago Texas A&M students. Not alumni, the students are a downright cult and it's annoying.
zooter117 2y ago Burning Man. Its a great idea, but theres alot of you're with us or you're against us
user29485829 2y ago Going to get a lot of stick for this but... Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general
DriftingPyscho 2y ago Edited 2y ago SEC College football Sauce: Live in the South. I've seen people nearly get into fist fights over this shit.
2y ago Don't see anywhere where someone's said Fraternities/Sororities. Wildly a cult. Was in one. Now I'm mid-thirties and it's ridiculous what they make you do and how they make you feel. Especially at such a vulnerable age.
FailedTheTuringTest1 2y ago Elon Musk fans. Не could literally murder somebody and they would still be like he is so innovative! A tech genius! My IDOL! and would come up with an excuse as to why the murder was justified
2y ago Edited 2y ago The troubled teen industry (youth residential therapy programs that are underregulated and rampant with abuse, SA, and children's deaths)
Flimsy_Breadfruit86 . 2y ago The Herbalife company. Despite being accused of being a pyramid scheme, they continue to function similarly. There are some people from my childhood who became addicted to it, and they act very much like members of a cult.
Previous_Proof21 2y ago MLMs, particularly Mary Kay. I once attended a convention as a consultant's guest in an effort to persuade me to go. Very stepford-like. She also failed to inform me that you were supposed to dress up, so I arrived in jeans and a hoodie.
shoestars 2y ago GameStop investors. I'm not talking about an average person who buys shares and intends to sell them at some future point for a profit, I'm talking about the doomsday financial collapse people who hold the ceo as some sort of messiah. Check out their subreddits. Shit is crazy.
PikaBooSquirrel 2y ago A certain giant e-commerce company. I worked there for a while. The pay is good, but at least where I worked, they try really hard to push the we are family idea. You take weekly pictures together with your family. There's weekly meals we eat together. There's weekly award ceremonies for best 'whatever''' There's a bunch of performative acts where they try to trick the monkey part of your brain into feeling good about itself so you'll deal with the asinine work. They give you a special vest when you move up the ladder so you can
GoGoGadget_1106 . 2y ago I always thought AA and NA had a cultish feel. Dont get me wrong I think these programs help lots of people and even benefited me for several months. I just saw to many people being pushed away and treated as sub human because they wouldnt fully comply with guidelines. I was slowly pushed out when I started to express the feeling that I didnt want to hang around forever and attend 3-4 meetings a week. Some people hang around for 40, 50 years or longer and thats great for them, but not me.
spacelordmthrfkr 2y ago High end raiding guilds in World of Warcraft. I'm not sure how much anymore, I haven't played in a couple years, but especially back in Vanilla-WotLK days Being in a raiding guild really felt like being in a cult. Like, you were pretty much expected to give up everything outside of raiding. It would take hours upon hours a week of scheduled time with the guild, then many more hours outside the raiding to work up your professions, grind dailies, I've known people to neglect their health, kids, jobs, school, family, everything because their guild was determined
2y ago Ballet. You are basically at their whim. You are expected to pay tuition, costumes, dance wear, dance shoes, travel fees, competition fees, production fees, tickets, and do volunteer work and give up your entire schedule. If you complain at all about anything valid or not- they shun you by not giving your kid a good role or not moving them up a level. And they withhold attention to your child. You literally must schedule all life around ballet. And pay thousands and thousands of dollars so your kid can be in the back. If you quit all
NoConsideration5775 . 2y ago There's the usual answers like religions, tech start-ups, etc. And then there's the BTS Army.
