Jimmy Fallon Mocked for This Self-Congratulatory Post About the Pope

God gives grace to the humble, but what about the humble-braggers?
Jimmy Fallon Mocked for This Self-Congratulatory Post About the Pope

Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 this past Sunday, and when the Vatican holds the state funeral for the late leader, you know that Jimmy Fallon will be there to slap that casket.

Back in June 2024, the late Holy Father hosted 100 famous comedians from 15 different countries at the seat of the Catholic Church for a holy humor summit intended to help the notoriously traditional papacy engage with modern culture. Pope Francis, who was known for his love of laughter, once told a TV interviewer, “A sense of humor lifts you up, it shows your life is short and to take things in the spirit of a redeemer,” adding, “It is a human attribute, but it is the closest to God’s grace.”

And, with the short life that he enjoyed, the head of the Church chose to spend precious time humoring a certain American late-night host and laughing at his jokes, which showed a level of grace and patience that was nothing short of divine.

The long-time Tonight Show host Fallon was one of the many American comedians who attended the Papal Punchline Powwow last year, and, when Fallon posted his memorial message about the late pontiff on all his social media accounts, comedy fans tore apart Fallons subtle choice to honor Pope Francis and his own comedy talents simultaneously like the Pope ripped communion wafers:

Now, of course, Fallon was probably trying to express some sentiment along the lines of “It was an honor to entertain the Pope during out time together” when he (or, more likely, his social media manager) blasted the above memoriam message to Twitter, Instagram and Threads. And, for the record, that would have been a lovely way for Fallon to pay his respects to the late Pope Francis, who loved to laugh even when nothing was funny almost as much as the Tonight Show host does.

But when youre paying respects to a head of state and a religious leader to over a billion people, its probably best to do a couple drafts before pressing post, because, once a tweet is out there, much like the Ten Commandments, its set in stone.
