Rainn Wilson Finally Reveals the Lyrics to ‘The Office’ Theme Song

In Chapter 15 of Rainn Wilson’s memoir, The Bassoon King, he reveals that he penned lyrics to the famously lyric-less theme song for The Office. But in an epic tease, he didn’t include the words in his book. Maybe, he wrote, he’d reveal them later.
Well, later is now. On this week’s episode of the Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know podcast, the host twisted Wilson’s arm. In his book, Minhaj noted, the guy who played Dwight Shrute wrote, "Perhaps I’ll sing them to you one day if you’re nice.”
“You haven’t been very nice,” countered Wilson.
Don't Miss
Minhaj protested. “I’m a pretty nice guy!”
The Office theme song has a complicated history. Producer Greg Daniels considered several options to open the show, including Modest Mouse’s “Float On” and Electric Light Orchestra’s “Mr. Blue Sky.” The ELO song was the top choice, but another show, the drama LAX, had already used the ditty. Daniels eventually chose an original instrumental by ‘70s pop star Jay Ferguson, performed by a one-off group called the Scrantones. (In addition to playing the theme, the musicians also performed as the band on the “Booze Cruise” episode.)
But as for the song's words? Wilson decided Minhaj was nice enough, and he would share the lyrics, reading them off his phone since it’s been a minute since he wrote them.
Here they are: Rainn Wilson’s officially not-official lyrics to The Office theme song. It probably helps to hum the music while you read, or just let Wilson do it for you in the video below.
The Office
A show about a boss
Mostly it’s a show about Dwight
Show is a lot of fun
Mostly Dwight’s a lot of fun
Remember Stanley
Mostly I remember Dwight
Krasinski’s manly
No one wants a bobblehead of Jim
Let's face it
It's a show about Dwight
Let’s get real
“Let’s go!” shouted an applauding Minhaj.
“Thank you, America,” replied Wilson, letting Minhaj know he’d received a valuable gift. “You just got your viral cutaway.”
