Kaitlin Olson Says ‘We’ll Figure It Out’ When ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Has to Deal With Danny DeVito’s Inevitable Death

The Gang doesn’t have a scheme in place for Frank's passing, but it shouldn’t be too hard to improvise one
Kaitlin Olson Says ‘We’ll Figure It Out’ When ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Has to Deal With Danny DeVito’s Inevitable Death

Nobody who loves It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or works on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia ever wants to think about what the show will do if Danny DeVito passes away while it’s still on the air. Luckily, Frank’s final arrangements are crystal clear.

It’s no small miracle that, at 80 years old, DeVito is still willing to go to work on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia every season and debase himself to new extremes without any hope for a second Emmy. When DeVito joined the show as Dennis and Dee Reynolds’ long-lost (and secretly illegitimate) father back in 2006, neither he nor FX could have expected the upstart sitcom about a bunch of asshole alcoholics living in Philadelphia to last another 20 years and 15 seasons without showing any signs of slowing down. Thankfully, and much like DeVito himself, Always Sunny continues to get real weird with it decades later.

Even still, DeVito and his loved ones know that anyone who reaches his age needs to make a plan for what happens to them after they pass on. In a recent interview for Emmy Magazine, Emmy nominee Kaitlin Olson admitted that she and her co-stars aren’t quite prepared for life after Frank — though, Olson promised, “We’ll figure it out.”

After all, how hard will it be to find a fitting dumpster?

When the topic of DeVito and his advanced age came up during her talk with the TV Academy that has long made a point of unjustly snubbing It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Olson remarked, “I dont know what were going to do with him — or his body.” While its easy to imagine that the Gang will honor the Trash Mans wishes to return to the trash after his passing, Olson, Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day may have a harder time handling DeVitos eventual (and hopefully far in the future) passing than their sociopathic on-screen counterparts.

The topic of DeVitos mortality has long been a touchy one among the online Always Sunny fandom, as, even though DeVito was the last member of the Gang to join the show, his immense presence and delightful depravity have become inextricable parts of the shows corrupted spirit. But Olson reminds us that many shows have continued on after the passing of a cast member, and, when it comes time for Frank to meet his maker, Paddys Pub will bravely and callously continue onwards.

As for a possible replacement, Im sure Dennis still has Franquitos number handy.
