‘Saturday Night Live’ Writer Playfully Claps Back at Morgan Wallen’s ‘God’s Country’ Crack

Josh Patten pokes fun at the post-show theatrics from this past weekend
‘Saturday Night Live’ Writer Playfully Claps Back at Morgan Wallen’s ‘God’s Country’ Crack

If Nashville is really “God’s country,” then why does the country music capital only have one Krispy Kreme location?

This past weekend, Saturday Night Live musical guest Morgan Wallen ruffled the fandom’s feathers by stomping off the stage right past the camera while host Mikey Madison and the SNL cast engaged in the customary credit-roll celebration. Later that night, the controversial country music superstar posted a picture of his private jet on his Instagram Story with the purportedly passive-aggressive caption, “Get me to God’s country,” sparking speculation that the Tennessee native and serial bar-trasher’s abrupt exit was a deliberate attempt to scorn the sketch show whose inexplicable invite he even more bafflingly accepted.

Naturally, the online SNL fandom didn’t take kindly to Wallen’s believed bad attitude and his apparent middle school mean girl-level social media theatrics that he allegedly pointed toward the nationally renowned show on which he never actually had to appear if he really does disdain New York and its cultural institutions. However, veteran SNL writer Josh Patten has taken a much more lighthearted and lightly glazed approach to mocking the tamest controversy of Wallen’s career:

With the above Instagram Story that Patten posted on Sunday following the explosion of critical social media posts directed at Wallen by the avid online SNL fandom, Patten triggered many of Wallens conservative-leaning supporters and the country music media machine that promotes the singer/songwriter. Just a couple hours after Patten made the above post, the country news outlet Whiskey Riff reported on Pattens playful response to Wallens supposed side-eyeing of SNL in an article titled, “SNL Writer Mocks Morgan Wallen’s Post-Show Instagram Story After Awkward Exit.”

In his coverage of the SNL controversy, Whiskey Riff writer Aaron Ryan snarked, “Wonder why Morgan would want to get out of there…” while simultaneously claiming that Wallens abrupt exit from the show and his subsequent social media activity werent meant to be insulting to SNL or its staffers. “Guessing Patten’s not a Morgan Wallen fan?” Ryan quipped of the comedy writers innocuous post about delicious donuts before taking his own shots at SNL, adding, “Of course a lot of the comments about Patten’s post online were pointing out that it’s no wonder the show isn’t funny anymore, but that’s a discussion for a different day.”

However, Patten quickly pushed back on the narrative that he and the rest of the SNL staff despise the Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and N-bomb-dropper. Following the publishing of the Whisky Riff article, Patten posted a screenshot of Ryan's prose alongside an eye-roll emoji on his Instagram Story before posting a screenshot of his Apple Music activity in 2023 that showed how Patten is a longtime listener of Wallen. Patten then added a picture of the Times Square Krispy Kreme location scored by the Wallen-featured Post Malone single “I Had Some Help” with the caption, “Bravely standing up to Whiskey Riff dot com so that my children and grandchildren wont have to.”

Clearly, Patten has a much more positive opinion of Wallen than the singers fans have of SNL, and the online outrage on both sides of the controversy outsizes whatever hard feelings the SNL staff may have about Wallens behavior. Maybe this whole story would blow over if Wallen and Ryan just returned to Satans City and broke some bread with the SNL writer — some light, fluffy, deliciously gleaming bread.
