In 1972, Italian actor and rock singer Adriano Celentano released his single, “Prisencolinensinainciusol.” The pop-y song, which combined elements of Europop, funk and disco, quickly climbed the charts, peaking at number two in Belgium and number five in both Italy and the Netherlands.
The catch? The song makes zero sense. All the lyrics were written in gibberish that was meant to resemble American English. “I thought that I would write a song which would only have as its theme the inability to communicate,” the artist recalled of the work, which was later likened to ‘80s Bob Dylan. “And to do this, I had to write a song where the lyrics didn’t mean anything.”
