‘King of the Hill’s Luanne Platter Is Named After A Beloved Texas Value Meal

King of the Hill’s Luanne Platter: World’s okay-est hairdresser, creator and host of the puppet show Manger Babies and a delicious Texan meal?

Before Lucky Kleinschmidt comes to kick my ass — or more realistically, tries his namesake luck at suing me — I should clarify that I mean the latter descriptor in the literal sense. Platter, like many King of the Hill characters, appears to have gotten her name from a Lone Star State institution: The LuAnn platter at Texas chain restaurant, Luby’s.

Pairing “a select entree” like “Fried Fish,” “Bacon Cheese Steak” or “French Grilled Liver” with “two sides and a roll” for an unspecified “great low price” per Luby’s website, the LuAnn platter has come to define the decades-old Southern cafeteria, putting it on the map as a “Texas comfort food staple,” as the Houston Chronicle once called it.

Even as the Brittany Murphy-voiced character continues to dominate Google results for both “Luanne Platter” and “LuAnn platter” — the latter autocorrecting to the King of the Hill spelling — the status quo is different down South.

Every Texan child knows what a LuAnn platter at Luby’s is,” CBS Texas wrote of the meal back in 2020 amid news that the restaurant’s board had voted to liquidate its remaining locations. “Half an entree, two vegetables and bread.”

With this apparent ubiquity — and its roughly 39 remaining restaurants as of 2025 — Platter is far from Luby’s only legacy both in and out of the King of the Hill canon. “Luly’s,” a thinly-veiled parody of the beloved eatery, has hosted Hank, Peggy and Bobby several times throughout the series' 13 seasons.

“Son, they got eight kinds of ketchup here and three kinds of catsup,” Hank proudly informed Bobby while standing before the seemingly steel-plated buffet.

Nine types of dips and a globe-spanning fork collection? I’ll eat to that.
