The funniest moments on film in 2024 didn’t just come from comedies — we still don’t know what genre Emilia Pérez was supposed to be.
Now that the 97th Academy Awards are finally out of the way, Film Twitter can move on to the real celebration of cinematic achievement as they select the best movie clips to populate group chats and Twitter threads until this year’s releases can supplant them. On the other hand, one of the biggest box office draws and most talked-about movies of 2024 was surprisingly bereft of memeable moments, as Wicked had more good gags during its press tour than during the nearly three-hour runtime. This may be a result of director Jon M. Chu’s strange directorial decisions and the overuse of backlighting during the more dynamic sequences in the movie — memes generally need visual clarity or they fall apart when repeated use inevitably reduces them to a blurry 144p.
Shockingly, the movie that dominated the Razzies this year and could best be described as one extended meme wasn’t represented in a single viral clip, as Megalopolis went mostly unnoticed in the funniest GIF competition, though I suppose that’s because someone would have had to actually watch Megalopolis to make a GIF in the first place.
