Jon Stewart Calls Bullshit on Elon Musk’s Excuse For Backing Out of ‘The Daily Show’

Last week we talked about how Jon Stewart got so fired up about Elon Musk’s conspicuously selective government funding cuts that he smashed a coffee mug on his desk and actually cut himself. But don’t worry, as Stewart later revealed, he quickly got treatment on the set and was immediately prescribed medical duct tape by Dr. Random Crew Guy.

After the episode aired, there were some interesting developments. An X user suggested that Musk should, himself, appear on The Daily Show, and he agreed to “do it if the show airs unedited.”
Don't Miss
The Daily Show responded on social media, saying that they’d be “delighted” to host the interview. In retrospect, they were probably just happy that Musk’s one proviso wasn’t that he be allowed to awkwardly wave a chainsaw around the studio while wearing cartoonishly large sunglasses.
But Musk later seemed to walk back that initial offer, suggesting that Stewart is actually “more of a propagandist than it would seem.”
Since Stewart only hosts The Daily Show on Mondays, he finally got a chance to respond to all this on camera last night. “After thinking about his offer, I thought, ‘You know, hey, that’s actually how the in-studio interviews normally air: unedited,’” Stewart began. “So, sure. We’d be delighted.”
He also underscored that the show is very flexible about its format, while taking the opportunity to dunk on Comedy Central. “As a matter of fact, let me sweeten or unsweeten the pot,” Stewart continued. “The interview can be 15 minutes, it can be an hour, it can be two hours, whatever. I’ll be honest, I don’t think this network makes any other programming. So we can do whatever the fuck we want as long as we wrap before the new season of South Park, which comes out in like May or June of 2026.”
But after citing Musk’s newest apparent excuse for not doing the show, as well as an earlier post criticizing Stewart for being too partisan, Stewart called out the inherent hypocrisy in these criticisms: “The guy who custom-made his own dark MAGA hat, that he wears to opine in the Oval Office with the president who he spent $270 million to elect, thinks I’m just too partisan. I’m really not sure what he thinks ‘bipartisan’ means, but it’s generally not, ‘I support Donald Trump and also Germany’s AfD party. That’s not bipartisan, that’s just the same shit,” Stewart noted, referencing Musk’s support of far-right European politicians.
“If you want to come on and talk about the show, great. If you don’t want to, sure. But can we just drop the pretense that you won’t do it because I don’t measure up to the standards of neutral discourse that you demand and display at all times? Because, quite frankly, you know it, I know it: bullshit,” the host concluded.
Thankfully there were no breakable objects within reach during this segment.
