For such a supposedly godless town, Hollywood sure does love themselves a Christian Devil. After all, why go to all the trouble of inventing a being of pure evil from scratch when the greatest story ever told already did it for you? It might get you into some hairy theological territory, but that’s for New York and their publishing houses.

“It’s easy to take a shortcut and include the devil in a movie, to establish a menacing villain without doing the leg work,” Redditor Kelvin_Inman told r/Movies, “but there are some great movies that create memorable and unique depictions of the devil, adding depth to an already well established character,” adding that “the devil can either be the focus of the movie or just a character who crops up. Heck, even if not depicted by a particular actor but just a presence or CGI, etc.”

They then asked, “What are some of the best depictions of the devil on film?” and all sorts of evil followed.
