The Subtle IMDb Homage to Homer Simpson Forgetting the Title of ‘Speed’
Homer Simpson is a man of many talents: Downing countless Duff beers at Moe’s Tavern night after night without so much as a hangover. Slacking off at work while never truly losing his job. Dumping so much pig crap into Lake Springfield that the EPA encased the entire town in a glass dome, turning it into essentially a giant snow globe.
A deep knowledge of movie trivia, however, cannot be counted among these skills, as Simpsons fans — who apparently include the overlords at IMDb — discovered during Season Eight’s “The Springfield Files.”
Don't Miss
“I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to speed around the city, keeping its speed over 50, and if its speed dropped, the bus would explode!” Homer told Lenny and Karl of his ploy to get out of work using loops of old security footage during the 1997 episode. “I think it was called The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down.”
Fortunately for Homer, and everyone else whose memories of ‘90s action thrillers have been lost to the sands of time (or who spent too much of their college years emulating Otto Mann), the folks at IMDb learned from this famous Simpsons gag, making their site a little more homey for Homer and everyone else who couldn’t be bothered to memorize all five characters of Speed’s title.
“Fun fact: if you search ‘The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down’ in IMDb, it will bring back the correct movie title,” Redditor lime-enthusiast captioned a screengrab of the database’s search results.
It’s a search result that I was able to independently verify:
The only thing better would be if Speed 2: Cruise Control came up whenever you searched for “The Slow-Moving Cruise Ship That Couldn’t Slow Down.”
