Ryan Reynolds Once ‘Manifested’ Playing Mac’s Boyfriend on ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’
Romance has never come easy for Rob McElhenney’s Mac in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. But after years of trying (and failing) to find true love, a journey defined by catfishing, unrequited crushes, spite-fueled hookups, 2000s transphobia and a short-lived attempt at wielding Dennis’ reverse-D.E.N.N.I.S system (the S.I.N.N.E.D. system) into a meaningful relationship, Mac may finally get to live up to his “meat mountain” moniker.
Back in 2022, McElhenney’s BFF and IRL Ted Lasso comrade Ryan Reynolds revealed that he’d be down to enjoy a whole lot more than an overpriced beer at Paddy’s Pub, agreeing to strike up an on-screen romance with Mac if given a stint on the long-running sitcom.
“I’m personally offended I’ve never been asked,” Reynolds replied when questioned about his lack of It’s Always Sunny… street cred during a puppy-fueled sitdown with pre-A.I. BuzzFeed.
Don't Miss
“Well, it can be arranged,” McElhenney replied before hinting that “Mac needs a boyfriend.”
“Great!” the gin overlord agreed. “Let’s do it!”
This craving for a tall glass of Mac was more than just a passing phase. A month and change after the interview made headlines, Reynolds reiterated just how much he’d love to get more than an ocular patdown from Paddy’s finest, heading to Tumblr to manifest his place on the FX(X) staple — and the rum ham enthusiast’s heart.
“Manifesting,” he captioned a GIF of his face superimposed atop of Mac’s spinning dance partner in Season 13’s “Mac Finds His Pride.”
Sadly, this love story — like most during these forsaken, Tinder-fueled times — doesn’t exactly have a happy ending. Over two years later, Reynolds has yet to sweep Mac off his feet. That said, who knows what kind of romance will be in the air during It’s Always Sunny’s upcoming 17th season. For Mac’s sake, we can only hope that it’s of the Deadpool and Wolverine variety.
