‘Rick and Morty’ Roasts Short-Lived TikTok Ban With Re-Edited Season Four Throwback

Though Morty — as Rick once put it — may be “as dumb as they come,” our space-traversing sidekick has some serious competition in the intellect department: The government bozos that put the kibosh on TikTok.

Hours before TikTok went dark on Saturday evening, the series’ overlords — or let’s be real, probably some underpaid social manager — took to both Adult Swim’s and Rick and Morty’s official online platforms with a pointed message about the then-impending ban, retooling a clip from Season Four’s "The Old Man and the Seat" to dunk on the decision.

“Take the app down!” Morty and Jerry — respectively labeled “US Govt” and “Tech Bros” — demanded of the mothership-driving Monogatron, with Rick’s intern Glootie (aka “TikTok”) in tow as their hostage.

“I can’t!” replied the alien, dubbed “China,” after confirming neither Morty, Jerry nor Glootie had weapons. “I’m an intern.”

“Okay, well, who tells interns what to do?” asked Morty.

“Not you, that’s for sure!” the Monogatron fired back.

As all of us phone-addicted earthlings can now attest, both Morty and the Monogatron were somehow in the right during this animated allegory. The United States, much like Rick, ultimately wrangled their alien interns, shutting down TikTok for all of 14 hours before the app was reinstated.

Still, it could be worse: We’d rather have TikTok (and Meta, and Twitter and YouTube) steal our data than suck up the global water supply via Tinder on steroids.
