Ben Schwartz Is Warning Us Now: He Wants to Make 10-15 Sonic Movies

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is projected to take the box-office crown this weekend with an estimated $70 to $85 million, even beating out Disney and its Lion King prequel Mufasa. The manic Ben Schwartz must be drunk on all that success, telling Stephen Colbert that the Sonic sequels may never stop.

“My hope is 10, 15 Sonics,” Schwartz threatened. “I want him to slowly age so by the time we’re on the tenth Sonic, he is really worried about his back. Running is no longer an option. He is walking but like power walking.”

Colbert found the aging blue furball’s reduced capacity relatable. “Past your 40s,” he said, “Sonic has to think about his knees.”

Given his age and physical limitations, the far-future adventures of Sonic don’t sound all that thrilling. Schwartz speculated he’d suffer a torn meniscus; Colbert lamented that the hedgehog would no longer be able to ski.

In fact, Sonic the Hedgehog 10 sounds like a random episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The comic host welcomed the opportunity to talk about his own withered joints, admitting his left knee acts up in accordance with the damp weather. “It twinges,” he explained. “I have to consciously walk up and down steps.”

Maybe Colbert, an acknowledged Sonichead, could weigh in on the screenplay. After all, as Schwartz informed the audience, “Stephen Colbert knows everything there is to know about Sonic the Hedgehog.”

But for those of you not keeping score at home, Colbert doesn’t know everything there is to know about Sonic the Hedgehog. When Schwartz appeared in 2022 to promote Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Colbert admitted he had no idea who the character was. He did, however, have some educated guesses about the character. “He’s a hedgehog.”

“You nailed it,” replied Schwartz.

Emboldened, Colbert claimed that while he wasn’t familiar with the movies, he had seen the play, based on the extremely dark series of podcasts. He even proclaimed to know one of Sonic’s famous catchphrases: “So you don’t like cheese now?”

“So you don’t like cheese now?” hasn’t shown up in a Sonic movie yet. But with another dozen installments in the franchise yet to come, there’s plenty of time.
