Martin Short Roasts His Famous Friends in ‘SNL’ Holiday Promo
You got to hand it to Martin Short — in the time it takes for most Saturday Night Live hosts to tell us about this week’s musical guest, he manages to roast six different celebrities for the holidays.
First up? Three SNL cast members who don’t get a lot of shine: Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker and newcomer Ashley Padilla. The three enter Studio 8H to find it stuffed with a dazzling array of holiday gifts. “Are these for us?” asks Walker.
Of course they are, shouts Short, beckoning them to the stage. In fact, Short has gotten each of them something special. “And that something special is a job, wrapping all my presents for all my famous friends,” he exclaims. “Which, of course, you three aren’t.”
Don't Miss
That festive sound you hear is three SNL cast members roasting over an open fire.
Another SNL celeb is up next. Short has the perfect gift picked out for Weekend Update host Colin Jost. It’s a book titled How to Develop a Personality. Jost is so boring, Short says, that “cocaine calls him ‘the challenge.’” Padilla, Walker and Longfellow nod their heads in agreement.
Next, Short has something for an 84-year-old father of a newborn. “Now, this baby rattle is for Al Pacino,” Short explains. “Not his baby. It’s actually for Al.”
Of course, Short’s longtime collaborator and SNL veteran Steve Martin doesn’t go without a gift. The suntan lotion is “SPF Infinity, because — let's face it — Steve is whiter than a Coldplay meet-and-greet,” Short jokes. “His blood type is mayonnaise.”
While Short has many famous friends to remember during the holidays, he hasn’t forgotten family. For his children, he’s picked out something special — 8x10 glossies of their favorite Hollywood star.
Even though their holiday gift boxes are empty, Padilla, Longfellow and Walker can’t help but get caught up in Short’s Christmas spirit. They attempt a festive embrace but an irate Short scares them off. “Back off! Don’t touch me!” he screams. “It’s ‘Merry Christmas’… from a distance.”
