‘Abbott Elementary’s Chris Perfetti Hints at ‘PG’ and ‘R-Rated’ Elements of ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Crossover

‘Abbott Elementary’s Chris Perfetti Hints at ‘PG’ and ‘R-Rated’ Elements of ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Crossover

A pack of elementary school teachers and a quintet of day-drunk degenerates walk into a bar…

No, it’s not the setup for a joke, but rather the premise of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary’s upcoming crossover episodes, one that apparently runs the gamut between good clean(ish) PG fun and the raunchy R-rated antics that could only come from the Paddy’s Pub crew.

Abbott Elementary’s Chris Perfetti recently lived up to his Janine Teagues-anointed nickname of Ta-Nehisi Quotes, speaking out about how the two tonally different series melded their signature senses of humor into a cohesive story for their possibly-too-highly-anticipated collaboration.

“As a huge fan of their show and of all of those actors, it was just surreal,” the actor recently explained to TV Insider of their two-part crossover, the first half of which is set to air on ABC on Wednesday, January 8th. “They are a highly trained ensemble that is so gifted, so generous. It was so fun to pit these crews, sort of, against each other to have the PG version of an ensemble and the R-rated version of an ensemble.”

While fans will have to wait until the new year to see how these two series merge mockumentary and pure raunch into a not-safe-for-Quinta-Brunson’s-mom television event, Perfetti hinted that the final product would seemingly incorporate the best of both shows, managing to “tell two different (stories) kind of on their own terms.”

“I can say that they are in an episode of our show, and we are in an episode of their show, and the episode of their show is sort of the behind-the-scenes of what really happened when they were on our show,” he explained, later noting that he was “very grateful” to the Always Sunny cast and that he’s “very excited” for fans to see the finished product.

Considering the gang’s famed penchant for lying — one exemplified by Barnabas Reynolds’ faux funeral, the D.E.N.N.I.S. System, Dee and Dennis’ welfare scam and essentially every single scene of the FX(X) staple — we hope they finally meet their fact-checking match in Abbott Elementary’s staff.
