Jon Lovitz Visits ‘SNL’ and Refuses to Leave

Yeah, that’s the ticket
Jon Lovitz Visits ‘SNL’ and Refuses to Leave

Dana Carvey is having a blast now that he’s once again an unofficial cast member of Saturday Night Live. He’s appeared on every episode in Season 50 so far, not only breaking out his Joe Biden impression (which seems to have caught on) but hamming it up in other sketches as well. While he’s in the Big Apple, it’s a great time to catch up with old friends, he told David Spade on the Superfly podcast. “I could have a boozy lunch or a boozy dinner with some friend every day.”

One guy who’s never been known to turn down a boozy lunch? Jon Lovitz, a comic whose tenure at SNL largely overlapped with Carvey’s. He popped up at 30 Rock for the Ariana Grande rehearsals, a visit that went longer than promised.

“Hello?” said Spade, imitating Lovitz’s nasal lilt. “I’m available for sketches.”

“Oh, he was there the whole time,” laughed Carvey, breaking out his own Lovitz impression. “He’s like, ‘I’m only going for the dress show because I have to do something tomorrow.’ And then he says, ‘Oh, I’ll stay for the air show.’ Then he stays for the air show. ‘I’m not going to the party, I have something I have to do tomorrow.’ Next thing you know, he’s at the party. It’s 3:30 in the morning. ‘I should go — but I’m not. Jealous?’”

Spade volleyed with his own dueling Lovitz. “‘I’m not going to sit with you and Lorne. Scooch!’”

At least Lovitz made himself useful, filming Carvey rehearsing a last-minute sketch.

“Long story short, I put on lipstick and a dress and a wig in a sketch about Jennifer Coolidge,” Carvey said. “They threw it at me Thursday night. And I just thought in my age group, I never really was in drag because Church Lady is whatever you think she is, there’s no lipstick.”

Sure, okay.

All Lovitz impressions aside, the anniversary year is the perfect time to give The Liar something to do other than make content for Carvey's Instagram. The last time we saw our friend Lovitz was in 2020,  playing Trump lawyer Alan Dershowitz in one of those cameo-studded Alec Baldwin bits that felt more like a stunt than a sketch. He’s only appeared one other time this century, dropping into Carvey’s opening monologue in 2012.

Okay, Lovitz, we get the hint! Since he’s going to poke his head through the Studio 8H doors every time Carvey is invited back, can't we throw the guy a bone and put him in a sketch as well?
