Matthew Broderick Wasn’t Sure He Wanted to Play a Premature Ejaculator on ‘Sex and the City’
Matthew Broderick appears to be a serial guest star, with appearances in recent years on Only Murders in the Building, Rick and Morty and Modern Family. But he never turned up on Sex and the City, despite his wife Sarah Jessica Parker being the series star. What’s the deal, Broderick?
There are a couple of reasons, he told James Corden on his This Life of Mine Sirius XM Show (via People). Scheduling conflicts were one. “Whenever there was a part that I could do,” he claimed, “I couldn’t do it is really all that happened.”
But it might have had more to do with a second reason — the kinds of roles the show was offering him. “Sometimes, it was like, ‘Do you want to do two days as the premature ejaculator?’ And I’d be like, ‘You know, I don’t know, it’s just kind of embarrassing.’”

Another potential problem was Parker being uncomfortable with Broderick on the SATC set. In a joint New York Times interview in 2002, she told him, “You’d show up on set, and I would be like…” (NYT describes her reaction as holding a napkin over her face and making a noise like the call of an exotic bird.) “I’d get so nervous. Like, Matthew’s here! Don’t look at me!”
As she described the potential horror, she realized her body was having an involuntary reaction. “Look at what’s happening,” she said as she pulled at her neckline.
“You’re getting hives?” Broderick asked.
“I’m getting hives just thinking about you being on set,” she confirmed. “It’s all so embarrassing.” It sounds nearly as humiliating as your wife’s show offering you the role of Premature Ejaculator.
Despite the potential humiliation, Broderick does say, “I wish that I had done it or been in it.” But not at the expense of stealing SPJ’s spotlight. “That was her thing, and that would be stunting me or something, I don’t know. It just never work worked out. I love that show and I would have been delighted to be in it, but it just never lined up right.”
