Calm Down, Goonies — The Sequel Rumors Are Fake News

Goonies fans started doing the truffle shuffle this month when barely credible news source The Sun reported that Goonies 2 had received the green light. The story contains many promising quotes, but tellingly, all of the details came from “a source.” If youre a superfan inclined to believe anonymous voices, then you were probably thrilled to learn that:

  • “The plan is to start developing the ideas for the follow-up next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027.”
  • “The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros. knows they have to get it totally right.”
  • “It’s likely major stars will come back, but the possibilities of where to take the sequel are endless.”
  • “The team who are going to be starting work on the project are so excited.”

Goonies fans were stoked.

There’s only one problem, says Variety, along with the original stars: The report is complete bullshit.

The first to dash the dream was Martha Plimpton, who played Stef in the original Goonies. “People, there is no Goonies2 script, there is no one ‘attached,’ Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real.”

At least she tried to turn the phony rumors into something positive, encouraging fans to invest in something real like registering to vote.

But don’t take Plimpton’s word for it. Corey Feldman, who played Mouth in the kiddie comedy, also threw cold water on the rumors via his Twitter feed. “2SDAY, IS #GOONIES2 REAL?! EVERY1 IS ASKING...I CAN OFFICIALLY TELL U 100% NO! I HAV NO INFO THAT A SEQUEL IS IN THE WORX,” he wrote.

Feldman did use the opportunity to promote another movie, however — The Birthday, a low-budget horror film due out in October. It might not satisfy your Goonies cravings, but it’s something.

The last time there was a real chance to make Goonies 2 was in 2014, says Variety. At the time, original director Richard Donner was recruiting the cast for another round of hijinks. “I’m 1,000 percent certain there will be a sequel,” said Sean (Mikey) Astin at the time. “I will bet my children on it.”

Oops. Donner passed away in 2021, so at least we know who’s not directing. Hopefully, the 53-year-old Astin will never have to pay off his bet. Just because today’s rumors are false doesn’t mean the gang can’t reunite for a geriatric version someday.

After all, Goonies never say die.
