According to former president Donald Trump, the cats and dogs of Springfield, Ohio are all in peril as Haitian immigrants are supposedly scooping up neighborhood pets and eating them. Is he sure that’s not just the Red Tick Beer company?
Last night, Trump took a moment during the presidential debate with Democratic nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris to hysterically parrot a talking point that blew up in alt-right social media circles earlier this week. Supposedly, after between 15,000 to 20,000 immigrants from Haiti settled in the small Ohio city of Springfield, dogs and cats began to disappear from their owners’ yards, and the locals allegedly suspect their new neighbors are turning their beloved pets into creole cuisine.
Of course, no one in Springfield, Ohio had anything to do with turning the shocking (and completely fabricated) story into national news and a central topic in last night’s debate — it was just Republican Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance and a bunch of actual neo-Nazi Twitter accounts reposting and repeating dubiously sourced and racially charged disinformation before Trump picked it up for his debate talking points.

Meanwhile, city officials and law enforcement officers from Springfield continue to shoot down the false reports about immigrant pet hunting, presumably noting that their city had much larger problems than a Snowball II or a Santa’s Little Helper going missing — they still gotta deal with that tire fire, after all.
Still, even after fact-checkers shot down Trump’s claim on national television that the Haitians of Springfield are trapping and eating beloved pets, Simpsons Twitter isn’t ready to let the story die.
