Elon Musk No Longer Follows ‘Rick and Morty’ on Twitter

Despite formerly being one of the most prominent celebrity supporters of Rick and Morty, Tesla and Twitter head Elon Musk no longer follows the series on his own social media site. Will Adult Swim sue him for the boycott?

When Rick and Morty first premiered in 2013, Musk was still a Tony Stark-like, playboy billionaire tech genius whom the exact demographic for Adult Swims soon-to-be-flagship show absolutely idolized. In fact, Musk had somewhat recently made a cameo in the 2010 Marvel film Iron Man 2 as himself talking to the titular superhero at a party, and only a select few internet sleuths knew or cared that humankinds Martian colonizer had to purchase the title of “Tesla founder” from the real geniuses behind his booming electric car business. To uninformed nerds, Musk was as close to a real-life Rick Sanchez as we had here on Earth, and as Rick and Morty began to take over online geekdom, Musk himself took notice and publicly, proudly identified as a Rick and Morty fan.

The love affair between Musk and Rick and Morty peaked with his cameo in the 2019 episode “One Crew Over the Crewcoos Morty,” but in the years since Elon Tusk told that son of a bitch Rick “I'm in,” the tech billionaire and online culture warrior has apparently cooled on the series — possibly because Rick and Morty recently stopped associating alleged child predators.

When Adult Swim fired former Rick and Morty star and co-creator Justin Roiland after it was revealed that he faced serious domestic violence charges, Musk jumped to Roilands defense on Twitter, calling Roiland “the heart of the show” in a reply to alt-right provocateur Tim Pools outrage over the removal. Behind the scenes, Roiland and Musk maintained a friendship prior to Roilands so-called “cancellation,” with Roiland even offering Musk advice on his Twitter takeover in text messages submitted as evidence during one of Musks many lawsuits regarding the acquisition.

Presumably, Musk unfollowed Rick and Morty out of solidarity with his friend, but the online Rick and Morty fandom had an even funnier explanation for the change of heart. Said one fan in a reply to the above tweet, “Rick and Morty on ketamine isn’t the same as it is on weed Elons realizing.”
