The Best Burns from ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ at Marvel’s Expense
Nothing, of course, is off-limits in Deadpool & Wolverine. There are fourth-wall breaking jokes, jokes making fun of Marvel fans, jokes at the expense of Fox’s X-Men movies and a shockingly personal joke about Hugh Jackman’s recent divorce. Deadpool shines brightest, however, when he’s roasting his new business daddy: Disney’s MCU. Jokes at the MCU’s expense are littered throughout the movie, but these are the five best.
‘Can We Just Be Done With the Whole Multiverse Thing?’
Just before Wolverine and Deadpool have it out with about a hundred Deadpool variants, Deadpool Prime asks the other Deadpools, “Can we just be done with the whole multiverse thing? It’s not great.” He proceeds to say that it’s been “miss after miss after miss,” and he encourages Marvel to “take the ‘L’” and move on. It’s highly doubtful Scoutmaster Kevin will listen to him, though. Speaking of which…
Scoutmaster Kevin
“Scoutmaster Kevin” gets another shoutout in Deadpool & Wolverine, just like he did twice in Deadpool 2. The exact joke this time around: Someone tells Deadpool, “I’m going to show you something huge,” and Deadpool replies, “That’s what Scoutmaster Kevin used to say.” Which obviously makes Scoutmaster Kevin Deadpool’s pedophilic Cub Scout leader from childhood. (One of the jokes from Deadpool 2: “As Scoutmaster Kevin used to say, ‘There’s a first time for everything, son.’”) But it also seems to be a glancing reference to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige.
‘There’s Only One Blade’
Surprising cameos abound in Deadpool & Wolverine, but the best one might be Wesley Snipes as Blade. When Deadpool, Blade and a handful of other multiverse rejects are driving their Honda Odyssey into the bad guy headquarters, Blade grabs a rocket launcher that Jennifer Garner’s Elektra says belonged to The Punisher. “Punisher?” Deadpool asks. “Which one? There’s been like five.” Blade then quips, “There’s only been one Blade — only ever going to be one Blade,” a clear reference to the MCU Blade reboot with Mahershala Ali that’s spent years in development hell.
The MCU’s ‘Anchor Being’
Early in the movie, Time Variance Authority employee Mr. Paradox — see #5 above — explains to Deadpool that every universe has an anchor being, and when that being dies, the universe itself starts to wither and die. Mr. Paradox is referring to Wolverine being the anchor being for Fox’s X-Men universe, but he could just as easily be referring to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and how the MCU has begun to decline since his death in Avengers: Endgame.
‘Welcome to the MCU…’
“Welcome to the MCU,” Deadpool tells Wolverine. “You’re joining at a bit of a low point.” No explanation necessary here.
