Bill Maher ‘Doesn’t See What the Big Crime Is” in Harrison Butker’s Speech
What has got the Woke crowd all hot and bothered now? It’s Harrison Butker’s controversial commencement speech, says Bill Maher on the latest episode of Real Time. But really, Maher wants to know, what’s the big deal? After going to great pains to explain that he has little in common with the pro-family, pro-Christian Kansas City Chief, Maher expressed bewilderment at how anyone could have a problem with the placekicker’s recent remarks at Benedictine College.
“I don’t get the thing he said, talking to women, ‘Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world,’” Maher said before giving Butker the thumbs up. “OK, that seems fairly modern.”
Maher quoted Butker once again. “‘But I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.’” Well, maybe a bunch of those lady grads are excited about starting a family, says Maher. “I don’t see what the big crime is, I really don’t.”

It’s just another example of the Left going bonkers, Maher claims. “(Butker) is saying some of you may go on to successful careers, but a lot of you are excited about this other way that people, everybody used to be and now can. Can’t that just be a choice too?”
Of course family can be a choice. Does the disingenuous Maher believe family is what the criticism is about? The comic who complains about America’s inability to grasp nuance has cherrypicked a couple of Butker’s least offensive lines, then asked “What’s the big deal?”
That’s a simple exercise. Look, I can do it too! “I would like to start off by congratulating all of you for successfully making it to this achievement today,” Butker said. What a guy! Congratulating the graduates — where’s the big crime? “For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives.” Hey, Butker is a pro-woman progressive! Why is the Left kicking him around?
Where’s the “big crime,” Maher wants to know? Just a reminder that Butker also told the graduates:
- President Biden fuels “degenerate cultural values” by supporting abortion rights or as Butker calls it, “the murder of innocent babies.”
- Pride events that support the LGBTQ+ community constitute “deadly sin,” while woke leaders are “pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America.”
- Women who pursue those “successful careers” are just buying into “the most diabolical lies told to you.”
None of this is a crime, but it’s also not “fairly modern.” It’s hard to know what’s worse — Butker telling women to stay home and have babies or Maher pretending that he doesn’t know what all the fuss is about.
