Becoming one of Hollywood’s top performers takes a lot more than hard work, talent and rich parents. You have to also possess some nebulous quality that makes people like you so much, they want to give you millions of dollars to look cool on camera. That can sort of work against you when some of the people looking cool on camera are supposed to be assholes. Maybe not you, the person who keeps getting roles because everyone loves them, but certainly the story, which is now staying afloat on action figures of a huge creep.
One of those people, as Redditor riri1281 correctly points out, is Robin Williams. He could make Stalin seem jovial and misunderstood, so it’s no surprise that without him, “it would have been way more obvious that his character” in Mrs. Doubtfire “is unbearable and an absolute villain.” They also cited The Rock, many of whose characters “would be considered over-confident assholes with little substance.”
After providing their own examples, they proceeded to ask r/Movies, “What movie character would be completely unlikable if it weren’t for the actor that played them?” and there was no shortage of responses.
