Let’s be perfectly clear: As a general rule, racism is not funny. But like most rules, this one proved that it can be broken, too. On Sunday, Twitter user @Tripolar_B asked the timeline, “You ever had a racist experience but it was funny tho.” The prickly question, which does seem jarring on the surface, allowed for thousands of people to respond with instances of racism leveraged against them, where they couldn’t help but laugh. From cases of mistaken identity to historically-rooted biases, these scenarios didn’t champion the proliferation of prejudices, but rather showcased just how ludicrous they are. In fact, they allowed people of color a brief moment of reprieve to commiserate and use humor as a coping mechanism.
