‘Barry’ Season Four Trailer Emphasizes the ‘Dark’ in Dark Comedy
In the words of Ramsay Bolton, “If you think this has a happy ending, you haven’t been paying attention.”
Earlier today, HBO released the official teaser for the fourth and final season of Barry, and Bill Hader and Alec Berg’s beloved brainchild seems set to continue its trend of each subsequent season being darker than the last all the way to the bitter end. Fittingly, a show about a ruthless and depressed hitman who tries to change his life has grown only more ruthlessly depressing as the seasons have gone on, and — spoilers for those who haven’t finished Season Three — the final chapter will begin with our antihero (emphasis on the “anti”) in prison, having grown delusional and hell-bent on revenge.
Don't Miss
It’s hard to believe that this is the same actor who once told us all about New York’s hottest clubs.
Hader told Vulture of Barry’s bleak trajectory, “There’s only so long a guy can get away with this. I know I feel watching shows sometimes, ‘They’re trying to keep the thing going, and now it’s getting ridiculous to keep the thing going.’” Season Four seems to be staying true to Hader’s assurance that actions will have consequences in the critically acclaimed series that has already netted Hader two consecutive Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
With Barry and Fuches in prison and vengeance on the docket, it’s hard to see Barry ending in any way other than a grisly one — but, in Barry fashion, Hader will undoubtedly find some levity and laughter even in the most dire of circumstances. It seems unlikely that Barry will spend an entire season incarcerated, so we should expect to see some unchained carnage comparable to his many, um, “outbursts” in previous season finales.
The final season starts April 16th, and we can't wait for Hader to comedically crush our souls one last time.
