The BBC To Make Britney Spears Documentary
A month and change following the release of the New York Times and FX's explosive Britney Spears documentary exploring the pop singer's life, struggles with the media, and the intense battles surrounding her conservatorship, the #FreeBritney movement has maintained a place at the forefront of the pop culture lexicon. Since the film's Hulu premiere, fans and celebrities like Bette Midler, Kacey Musgraves, and Paramore's Haley Williams have continued speaking out about Britney's legal woes, as some even called for her to be released from the conservatorship together.
However, it seems these conversations and press coverage surrounding the issue are far from over. The BBC has apparently “greenlit” a new documentary centering around Spears' conservatorship battle and the #FreeBritney movement, Deadline reported on Wednesday. The film, which is tentatively entitled Britney, will center around Mobeen Azhar, a BAFTA-winning reporter, who sits in on a court hearing, “finding himself in the midst of the ongoing battle between Spears’ conservatorship team and her passionate fans,” speaks with participants of the #FreeBritney movement as well as individuals that are close to the star, and even takes a trip down south to her hometown, located in Kentwood, Louisiana.
“I went to LA in search of the truth of how Britney Spears, one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, ended up in a conservatorship,” Azhar said in a statement obtained by the entertainment publication. “I found myself in a world of lawyers, superfans and paparazzi and spent time with many of the people who’ve had a front row seat in Britney’s life. This film taps into the energy of the #FreeBritney movement and questions the industry, fandom and the laws that facilitate conservatorships.”
Don't Miss
Although there are no public details as of yet about the film's release date, the documentary is set to air on BBC 2. It's #FreeBritney, bitch.
