UPDATE: Sen. Ted Cruz Blames Vacationing During Texas Weather Emergency On His Daughters?
With the Zodiac Kil-- sorry, Senator Ted Cruz back in the Lone Star state, after sparking controversy for vacationing as Texas grapples with the aftermath of a deadly winter storm that has left millions without power, the politician has spoken out, sharing a statement in an attempt to cover his as-- uh, I mean clarify the situation. His excuse? His daughters made him do it. "With school canceled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends," the Senator explained. "Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon. My staff and I are in constant communication with state and local leaders to get to the bottom of what happened in Texas," he continued."We want our power back, our water on, and our homes warm. My team and I will continue using all our resources to keep Texans informed and safe."
Twitter, and well, most anyone with a functioning brain, however, refused to buy his excuse, discussing his daughters' newest vacation destination ...
... personally relating to the bizarre move ...
... highlighting the absurdity of the situation by comparing Cruz' kids to Veruca Salt, the infamous spoiled brat from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Cruz's flimsy alibi, a wacky combination of "the dog ate my homework" and "let them eat cake" expands beyond simply blaming his children for his behavior. The Senator said that he planned to escort his family to their getaway destination of Cancun, Mexico before immediately returning home. Normal! A source familiar with the Cruz family's winter vacation told NBC News that this was also untrue, claiming that the politician was supposed to stay in the tropical destination until Saturday, his hasty return ticket booked at 6 a.m. Thursday morning. I guess not even Cruz can be can not be trusTED.
Yet as the skepticism poured in surrounding Cruz's comments on his getaway gaffe, reporters at CNN noticed an even more cringe-worthy blunder -- nearly three months ago, Cruz had lashed out at several Democrats for skirting their own safety guidelines amid the Covid-19 pandemic. "Hypocrites. Complete and utter hypocrites," the Senator wrote alongside a clip from CNN last December "And don't forget @MayorAdler who took a private jet with eight people to Cabo and WHILE IN CABO recorded a video telling Austinites to 'stay home if you can...this is not the time to relax." That aged like a fine glass of milk.
So Senator Cruz, alongside learning an important lesson about not jet setting as your state endures a deadly storm while millions remain without electricity, take a page from your own book -- don't be a "complete and utter hypocrite"
