'Tuca & Bertie' Is Back, And That's A Win For Everybody
It's been almost a year since Netflix made the stunning decision not to bring Tuca & Bertie back for a second season. Which was a total stomach punch since the show's first season is so, so good:
While it draws obvious comparisons to Bojack Horseman, which showrunner Lisa Hanawalt also worked on, it stands out spectacularly on its own. Rather than give us another character in the Rick Sanchez/Bojack/Elon Musk/Joker vein, where rooting for the main character feels wrong somehow and gets worse over time, it's actually quite easy to root for Tuca and Bertie right out the gate. They deal with everything from crumbling relationships to professional setbacks to personal trauma, they do it with people birds who are there as support systems, and it's a triumph.
Now, they're coming back.
It's apparently another 10-episode order, just like season one. This is a fantastic snag by Adult Swim for a couple of reasons. The most obvious being that this should have happened long ago. They've got a solid history with nontraditional shows, particularly with adult-focused animation, and Tuca & Bertie should fit seamlessly into their lineup. The other, less obvious reason is that it's the type of show that, for the most part, can be worked on from home. There's been endless speculation around the internet (including on this site) as to what the near future of television is going to look like, and "more animation!" makes as much sense as any decision. Just don't do it halfway, you know?
Isaac is on Twitter and Instagram @NotFunnyIsaac and about 70% of why he likes this show is because he likes birds so much.
