Netflix, For God's Sake, Please Call Selena's Husband

Wouldn't you want to know anything about a Netflix series where you're going to be portrayed?

In the early 1990s, the band Selena y Los Dinos, fronted by singer Selena Quintanilla, help spread Tejano music globally. The tragic story of her death, murdered by the president of her fan club, shook the music world. The 1997 Jennifer Lopez film Selena debuted while her life and death were still fairly fresh in everyone's minds, which helped to cement it as a classic biopic.

Now, the year of the 25th anniversary of Selena's death, Netflix is putting together a multi-part series about her, featuring The Walking Dead's Christian Serratos.

Selena would only be in her 40s if she were still alive today, which means that many of the people who worked with her and were close to her are still around to see any type of series like this (Hell, her murderer will be up for parole in 5 years). But right now, based on a lightly-cryptic Instagram post by Selena's husband, Chris Perez, it would seem he's been totally out of the loop on this one.

See, Perez wrote a memoir titled To Selena, With Love, and had plans back in 2016 to make a series based on it. Except due to an agreement that Perez and Selena's family all signed in the 90s shortly after her death, there was just no way he was going to be able to pull that off. Her likeness, name, and a bunch of other stuff belong to her father, who took Perez to court over it. A quick couple years later, Netflix announced its own series in cooperation with the Quintanilla family, and Perez is now stating on Instagram that he's gotten zero information on it.

It's probably safe to assume that if someone is going to be playing you in a Netflix series, you'd like to have some idea of what's going on. It's bad enough to lose a spouse, but losing your own image is just an extra kick in the teeth.
