Here's The Movie That Might Win Adam Sandler An Oscar
Every now and again, Adam Sandler randomly decides to take on a dramatic role that in no way involves hanging out with Rob Schneider in a suspiciously tropical location. Recently he starred in Noah Baumbach's The Meyerowitz Stories (New And Selected). Back in 2002, he drew raves for his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love. And then there was Spanglish, in which ... yup, he was in a movie called Spanglish.
As we've mentioned before, this December, he'll be appearing in Uncut Gems, a thriller about a jewelry store owner frantically trying to settle his debts. The trailer for the film was released today, and it looks intense, to say the least. Like, even more intense than that movie in which Sandler plays the son of Satan himself!
While we can't be 100% sure that he isn't secretly wearing cargo shorts in some of those shots, it sure seems like Sandler gives one of the most committed performances of his career. Uncut Gems co-stars former NBA player Kevin Garnett, The Weeknd, and Idina Menzel, best-known as the voice of Elsa in Frozen and nemesis of John Travolta's brain. The film was directed by the Safdie Brothers, whose previous picture, Good Time, was a terrific (and equally stressful) crime drama starring former bat-man / future Batman Robert Pattinson.
Sandler's performance may actually lead to him getting some awards that aren't shaped like a bucket of popcorn. Yes, if internet buzz is to be believed, the star of Jack And Jill could be nominated for an Academy Award. Meaning that the frontrunners for Best Actor in 2020 might end up being Sandler and a dude playing the Joker, as if the Academy's voting body were commandeered by your time-displaced 14-year-old self.
