Zack Is Governor Of Cali In The 'Saved By The Bell' Reboot
NBC's upcoming streaming service, "Peacock" (yeah), announced its roster of new shows -- and by "new" we mean almost painfully old. We're getting yet another version of Battlestar Galactica, as well as a reboot of Punky Brewster, the '80s sitcom about an adorable orphan who occasionally battled giant spiders. Most notably, though, there's going to be a sequel to Saved By The Bell. And it sounds ... pretty weird.
Saved By The Bell tackled a lot of serious issues in its day, from caffeine pill addiction to drinking and driving to the perils of randomly stumbling upon $5,000 in a mall when you're just trying to score U2 tickets. And the new show will seemingly address income inequality in America.
In the new show, Zack Morris is apparently governor of California. He gets into "hot water," and not because the public learns of all the straight-up crimes he committed as a teenager, but because he closes too many low-income high schools. Now a bunch of poor kids have to go to rich schools, including Bayside High. Thus is the way paved for society's riff-raff to give the privileged brats of Bayside a "much-needed and hilarious dose of reality." Because if there's one thing poverty is good for, it's hilarity.
The show will also feature A.C. Slater and Jessie Spano, who are now dealing with life as parents and the hell that is living under the tyranny of Governor Morris. While the news release doesn't specify, the implication is that Slater and Jessie are a couple now. Which is weird, because the last we saw of them, they weren't together. In fact, Slater was dating Carla ... whose ex-boyfriend tried to murder everybody ... because he was a mobster planning a diamond heist ... on the same week as Zack and Kelly's wedding. Presumably, at some point between then and now, Slater and Jessie got together and had kids. And maybe Screech got eaten by coyotes or something, which is why we will never see or hear from him again.
