The only thing more mediocre than Dwight D. Eisenhower’s presidency? His notable lack of rizz.
In a newly-unearthed episode of The Howard Stern Show, longtime Stern sidekick Robin Quivers shared some old-school Hollywood gossip, detailing Eisenhower’s rumored crush on Donna Douglas — the actress who played Elly Mae on The Beverly Hillbillies — one he allegedly expressed during a chat with actor Buddy Ebsen.
“When he met up with him, Ike kept asking him if he could get Elly Mae’s phone number,” Quivers recalled of 34’s purported meeting with the Jed Clampett actor. In his 70s by that point, the ex-President was said to have pressed on after asking for her digits, supposedly asking the sitcom star “what it was like to get to hug” his on-screen daughter “all the time.”
In most circumstances, we’d take this opportunity to properly roast Eisenhower from beyond the grave, but apparently doing so could have some serious consequences, per comedian Jena Friedman. In a recent Instagram post, the Indefensible host shared a scary anecdote from a recent trip abroad, revealing that an official asked her about the political nature of her material while traveling from Vancouver to L.A. “The U.S. customs agent asked what I was in town for and after I told him I was in town performing comedy, he asked, ‘Do you make fun of politicians?’” she recalled of the “brief exchange.” “Know your rights and proceed with caution.”
We can’t promise that these tweets won’t get their respective authors stopped at customs, but we can promise that they’ll make you smile. The funniest include those about Jersey Mike’s employees having a day, scabies dates and the Beyoncé of beagles.
