‘Don’t Get Into a Relationship With Your Co-Star You Moron’: Glenn Howerton Recalls Rob McElhenney’s Poor Listening Skills in Birthday Tribute

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney is a man of many talents — interpretive dance, gaining and losing roughly 60 pounds for a bit and somehow making Ryan Reynolds seem slightly less insufferable — but listening to his close friends apparently isn’t among them.
McElhenney’s longtime co-star, Glenn Howerton, headed to Instagram on Tuesday with a sweet-and-snarky post honoring not only the Mac actor’s 48th birthday, but the FX(X) star’s apparent penchant for outright ignoring his closest confidants.
“Late Happy Birthday tribute to a one of a kind legend,” Howerton captioned a photo of him and his TV bestie posing arm-in-arm. “An illimitable dreamer who never listens to words like ‘stop, no’ or ‘you can’t do that on TV’ or ‘you’ve been cut out of another movie’ or ‘you can’t just buy a soccer team’ or ‘for the love of god don’t gain 60 lbs for a stupid TV show’ or ‘don’t get into a relationship with your co-star you fucking moron you’ll ruin everything.’”

Despite this run-on passive aggression — the kind seemingly plucked from the implication-filled mind of his It’s Always Sunny character Dennis Reynolds — Howerton’s frustration was all in jest, the actor touting his friend’s penchant for doing whatever he goddamn pleases. “This is the mindset of a winner,” the A.P. Bio alum continued. “But most impressive of all is he drags the ones he loves along with him and he hangs on tight.”
Considering that all of McElhenney’s aforementioned ventures have managed to work out pretty good in retrospect — especially his marriage to It’s Always Sunny’s Kaitlin Olson, if her birthday post honoring him is any indicator — it seems like the only person he ever really needs to listen to is himself.
