For as important as they are to the filmmaking process, we don’t really give screenwriters much credit. Like, name a single one who isn’t also a director or something. All the best ones have to console themselves with for their hard work is their millions of dollars and shelves full of Oscars. And it is hard work. Coming up with the entire plot and all the dialogue is maybe more work than anything else on that set.
But as hard as it is to write a whole movie, it’s even harder to write one really good line. The context of the interaction between characters is really important; stripping it will usually remove all meaning, unless the hero comes up with a perfect quip during the explosion that lovingly places them back on the ground with the grace an Olympic gymnast would envy.
