20 Movies That Are Pretty Messed-Up When You Think About It

In this age of media illiteracy, movies are often misinterpreted, but more and more, studios and audiences work as a team in this endeavor. Like, sure, Tyler Durden was clearly the villain of Fight Club, but to be fair, they made him look really, really cool. Yeah, there’s an in-text reason he had to look like Brad Pitt, but did they also have to dress him in red leather and $1,000 sunglasses? Was his soap business doing that well? And he bought shades before a properly weatherproofed home?
Sometimes, though, a movie unabashedly tries to pass off a truly deranged moral code as normal and good. For example, “Pretty Woman is one of the most repellent and dangerous American films I’ve ever seen,” user LeTervuren told r/AskReddit. “It's two hours of sexist, classist, racist, social Darwinist masturbation that embodies everything wrong with the oeuvre of its jackbooted crypto-fascist scumbag of a leading actress.” Their, uh, issues with Julia Roberts aside, they make a fair point.

They then asked, “What is a film with a genuinely evil moral center?” and their fellow Redditors provided nothing but pure evil in return.
