This Is Why a ‘Law & Order’ Star Officiated John Mulaney’s Wedding
John Mulaney is bringing his chaotic live talk show back to Netflix this week, with sidekick Richard Kind along for the ride, thank goodness. From all accounts, Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney will be very much like last year’s limited series John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in L.A., and is not, as the trailer would have you believe, a 1970s political conspiracy theory thriller.
To promote the show, Mulaney has been making the interview rounds, which has entailed a lot of discussions about his personal life, including his children and marriage to actress Olivia Munn in July 2024.

While celebrity wedding reports are usually boring as hell, one of the most intriguing details to emerge from Mulaney and Munn’s private ceremony was the fact that it was officiated by Sam Waterston, aka Jack McCoy from Law & Order. Thankfully, the wedding didn’t begin with someone randomly finding a corpse behind a dumpster, and they didn’t replace Mendelssohn’s Wedding March with those intense “Dun Duns.”
During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Mulaney explained exactly how he got TV’s most famous district attorney to show up at his wedding.
When asked to share his recollection of the big day, Mulaney responded, “Well, our wedding was a very simple ceremony. We were married by Sam Waterston from Law & Order, The Killing Fields and a co-star of Olivia’s on The Newsroom.”
According to Mulaney, while working on Aaron Sorkin’s HBO series, Waterston “once said to Olivia, ‘If you ever get married, I’ll perform the ceremony.’”
“He did? Why did he say that?” Kimmel questioned.
“I think it was chit-chat,” Mulaney responded. “But you know, you take people up on what they offer. Remember you were once like, ‘Hey, if you’ve ever fallen on hard times, you can live in my guest house’? Bam. There I was,” the comedian added, referring to the time he stayed at Kimmel’s property following his time in rehab.
In addition to Academy Award nominee Sam Waterston, the ceremony reportedly only included two other people: a witness and Mulaney and Munn’s two-year-old son Malcolm. But only one of them defecated in the middle of the ceremony. “He actually went to the bathroom during it and announced it,” Mulaney said of his toddler. “Mid-vows. A very sweaty two-year-old in a tuxedo just went, ‘I’m pooping!’”
Given the minimal size of the wedding, it’s pretty impressive that they were able to rope the Law & Order star into keeping his promise. Sadly, Jerry Orbach passed away in 2004, and was therefore unable to participate in Mulaney’s wedding in any capacity.
