Of Course the ‘Mythic Quest’ Spin-off Will Put An ‘It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Actor in the Spotlight

The ‘Always Sunny’ fandom knows they’ve seen Phil somewhere before

The relationship between Rob McElhenney’s many comedy shows is more incestuous than whatever Barbara thought Dennis and Dee were doing back in Season Two.

As McElhenney’s second beloved comedy series Mythic Quest approaches the end of its fourth season, AppleTV+ has announced that it has given the show a greater commitment than Ian Grimm can give to his own son. Last week, AppleTV+ released the trailer for SIDE QUEST, a four-part anthology miniseries that the streamer is marketing as an “expansion” to the Mythic Quest universe. The workplace comedy about a World of Warcraft-style multiplayer video game will use SIDE QUEST to explore “the lives of employees, players and fans who are impacted by the game in an anthology format,” according to the streamer, with special attention paid to the Mythic Quest family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, apparently.

Immediately after the trailer for SIDE QUEST dropped, fans of Mythic Quest star and creator McElhenney’s first love flocked to the comments to remind everyone that McElhenney is loyal to his It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia collaborators, and that the jabroni featured opposite McElhenney doesn’t know who Mike Schmidt is.

“Isnt that the guy who tells Mac and Charlie that they dont have any Redmond the Robots in stock on Christmas Eve?” the top commenter in the Reddit thread about the SIDE QUEST announcement asked of actor Derek Waters, who appeared in the 2010 It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia holiday special “A Very Sunny Christmas” back in 2010.

Another Always Sunny fan replied, “That bozo doesn’t even know who Von Hayes is.”

Mythic Quest is full of sunny cast-offs! Makes sense this one is too,” a separate Always Sunny watcher commented.

Sadly, this small section of the Always Sunny fandom has shown that, despite our instructions, so many Always Sunny-watchers are still sleeping on Mythic Quest instead of coughing up for the AppleTV+ subscription — or, at least, scoring a free trial. Waters, who is both the star/creator of the Comedy Central hit historical comedy series Drunk History and the toy shop worker who clearly isn’t a fan of the Phillies on Always Sunny, has been a member of the Mythic Quest universe ever since he first appeared as an overworked, underappreciated art department head Phil in the Season Two episode “Grouchy Goat.”

Still, it’s always a welcome sight when McElhenney and his fellow Always Sunny/Mythic Quest collaborators David Hornsby, Charlie Day and Megan Ganz give lesser-seen but beloved actors from the first show a bigger part in their own side quest. And, with Day finally joining the Mythic Quest cast, we wonder who else from the Always Sunny family will get their turn on Mythic Quest — we know how excited Frank gets about online games.
