Don’t Forget That Homer Simpson Is Canonically Communist

Hammer-and-sickle Homer is the ‘Simpsons’ standard

Now, in all fairness to any staunch capitalists outraged by that headline, it’s hard to determine Homer Simpson’s exact political ideology given his tendency to misspeak. For instance, he probably meant to say, “Why can’t we have no kids and three money?”

Like most long-running satirical comedy shows, The Simpsons can be a bit all over the place when it comes to its political leanings. Sometimes the show portrays the Republican party as plainly and proudly evil, other times it says the Democrats can’t govern, but more, often than not, it’s aiming at both sides of the aisle and attacking the American political system as a whole — but don’t blame me, I voted for Kodos.

However, for all its topical condemnations of the 1990s most prominent politicians, there has been one political issue for which The Simpsons leaves no gray area. Homer Simpson is a card-carrying, Joseph Stalin-loving communist:

As Twitter user and the Simpsons fandoms one-man House of Un-American Activities Committee @BoltzmannBooty so sleuthfully uncovered, Homers not-so-secret support of the worldwide Communist party runs back to the very beginning of the show, and it has survived too many iterations of the writers room for the throughline to be a mere coincidence. Perhaps the conspiracy goes all the way up to series creator Matt Groening, which would mean that his gun-toting, whiskey-shooting, eye-patch-wearing conservative persona is the perfect cover for a Soviet spy.

Of course, all of this calls into question the actual motives behind Homers actions in the Season Nine episode “Simpson Tide,” oft-mentioned in the above thread, a storyline in which Homer “accidentally” causes the Springfield Power Plant to go into a near-meltdown, joins the Navy and “unintentionally” Battleship Potemkins a nuclear submarine. Maybe Homer is a sleeper agent in the style of The Americans and his mission since 1989 has been to set off the chain of events that awakens Zombie Lenin from his slumber.

Maybe Homer must crush capitalism as hard as he crushes Duff.
