21 of the Most Hilarious Foreign Titles of Famous Movies

Denmark’s translation of ‘Cruel Intentions’ gets straight to the point

One of the weirder problems of all the world’s movies coming from one city is translating their titles. A lot of them are based on idioms that don’t make sense outside of American English, or other languages literally don’t have the words for them, or they just want to spice it up for international audiences. “One of the more infamous examples of this is The Shawshank Redemption,” Redditor Ok-Impress-2222 told r/Movies. “Primarily to Finnish, where it’s Rita Hayworth — Key to Escape, and to Russian, where it’s Escape from Shawshank … both of which do a tremendous job spoiling the movie.”

“But more recently,” they continued, “the inspiration for this post was the translations of titles of the Despicable Me tetralogy to Croatian,” which include How Gru Stole the Moon ("Well, how about the literal plot of the movie?" they said), Gru on a Super-Secret MissionHow Gru Turned Good and (“Oh, fuck, they made another one?! Uh... I don’t know…”) Gru and the Minions: Fearless Spies. (“Yeah, that sounds good.”)

They then asked for the “most egregious translations of movie titles to your native language?” and Reddit responded with all kinds of hilarious nonsense.
