21 of the Worst Movies That Got Nominated for Best Picture

How did ‘The English Patient’ beat ‘Fargo’?

The Oscars is that one magical night a year when Hollywood gets together to celebrate achievement in filmmaking, aside from all the other nights they do that. It’s also a celebration of backroom deals, historical whitewashing and old fogeys who can’t even be bothered to watch most of the movies they vote on. That means a lot of films get nominated for and even win awards that are only remembered in the future in the same thought as, “What were they thinking?”

For example, “Bohemian Rhapsody was dull, historically inaccurate to the actual events, and had bad editing, but somehow it wins the Golden Globe and gets multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture,” one Redditor told r/Movies. They then asked, “What’s another example of a movie you think is terrible that for some reason (got) nominated for tons of Oscars, including Best Picture?”

It took no time at all for their fellow Redditors to respond with all kinds of award-winning awfulness.
