Danny DeVito Promises That the ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Cast Got Weird With It on the ‘Abbott Elementary’ Set

DeVito admits that the Paddy’s Pub gang got ‘a little wild’ while working with the put-upon teachers of ‘Abbott Elementary’

When It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia arrived on the Abbott Elementary set, did the family-friendly ABC sitcom have a production assistant specifically assigned to clean up Danny DeVito’s beer volcano?

Earlier this month, Rob McElhenney and Quinta Brunson officially announced the upcoming crossover between It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary that they’ve been planning ever since the viral and horrific Glasgow Willy Wonka Experience first inspired the two to team up back in January. However, the two defining sitcoms from the City of Brotherly Love are polar opposites in terms of their tone and their moral compasses, a point that fans brought up as soon as the first on-set photos emerged showing the Paddy’s Pub gang standing next to the teachers and staff of Willard R. Abbott Elementary School with nary a katana or a revolver in sight.

This week, DeVito spoke to PEOPLE at the Los Angeles premiere of Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band about the slight culture clash that occurred when he and the rest of the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia staff showed up to the Abbott Elementary set, saying, “I think we get a little wild in the show for them, but they’re handling us pretty well.”

So no one in the mash-up was mashing it, then.

“We had a great time,” DeVito said of the shooting experience on Abbott Elementary. “Theyre wonderful people. Its such an odd mix, so its going to be fun.” While the producers of Abbott Elementary have already revealed that the episode featuring the characters of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will mainly involve the most undereducated character on the show, the Dayman himself, Charlie Kelly, all five of the core Paddys Pub gang will have their time to shine in the crossover episode, and DeVito promised that “lots of surprises” are ahead.

ABC hasnt yet announced an air date for the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia/Abbott Elementary crossover episode, but we know that the collaboration will come in the ninth episode of Abbott Elementarys ongoing fourth season, so look out for the Philly mash-up sometime in December. And, hopefully, Franks time at an underserved elementary school wont necessitate another intervention.
