‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Fans Demand to See Dennis Reynolds and His Tools in Possible ‘American Psycho’ Reboot

Dennis Reynolds has to return some videotapes — the video store guy will want to know what he thought of Transporter 2.

Ever since Glenn Howerton and the rest of the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creative team first started to unleash Dennis’ full potential for sociopathy around Season Three, fans of the series have long drawn comparisons between the D.E.N.N.I.S. System architect and Patrick Bateman, the villain protagonist and unreliable narrator of Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel American Psycho and its 2000 film adaptation starring Christian Bale. After all, the similarities are obvious — both men are vain, emotionless besides disgust and greed, clinical in their “approach” to women and the objective peak of masculine aesthetics. 

Earlier this year, Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider claimed that Lionsgate is planning “a new American Psycho movie,” and although the studio itself hasn’t yet revealed any plans to revisit its cult-beloved satirical horror/thriller, the fans have already begun the casting process on the project. At the top of the list of fan-chosen leads to take over the role from Bale is, of course, the Golden God himself, who Sunny die-hards hope will soon have to switch his reservation from Guigino’s to Dorsia.

Sneider’s article sparked the speculation and fan-casting over a possible sequel, reboot or spin-off back in February of this year, but ever since then, no further news about Lionsgate’s supposed search for an American Psycho 2 screenwriter has come out to support the possibility of a Patrick Bateman recast. However, earlier this week, an infographic that came out following the first report (one that misspelled Howerton’s first name in the image) once again skyrocketed to the top of the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia subreddit under the title, “Please Let This Be True!!”

While the infographic and plea quickly became one of the most upvoted posts on the Always Sunny subreddit in the last year, fans in the comments were less enthused about the idea of Howerton heading an American Psycho remake or sequel than the original poster. “You don’t need to remake EVERY SINGLE MOVIE,” one declared.

Another added, “Terrible idea — Glenn is 48 years old. Patrick Bateman is 27.”

“I love Glenn, but Bale knocked that role out of the fucking park — absolutely no need for a remake, Bale was already perfect,” one more opined. “I hope this remake ends up stuck in development hell and doesn’t get made, lol.”

Howerton himself has expressed his own apprehension toward playing so many Dennis-like roles outside of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, admitting in a Variety interview from last year, “I would love to play a character that’s not so intense all the time. … I’m excited to get something like that in the future where I can express a totally different side of myself, the softer side of myself, which is very much there.”

Well, that precludes him from ever being Patrick Bateman — we all know that he simply is not there.
